Texas 4, Mississippi Valley State 0
Mississippi Valley State bowed out of the NCAA Softball Tournament, losing to Texas 4-0 in the Tuscaloosa Regional hosted by the University of Alabama.
Texas scored a single run in the third, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh to advance to the Regional final against Alabama.
The Devilettes had baserunners on in each of the first five innings but could not get a run-scoring hit. Mississippi Valley had its best chance to score in the fourth inning. With one out, Ashley Lawrence and Megan Hays drew back-to-back walks to give the Devilettes two on with one out. However, during the next at-bat, Lawrence was picked off second base for the second out.
Valley’s Angelica Jones then walked to give MVSU runners on first and second with two out. Rashundra Brass grounded into a fielders choice to end the scoring threat.
The six-time defending SWAC Champs ended the season 38-16, their best record in school history.
MVSU 1, Chattanooga 0
(Courtesy of Alabama Sports Information) - Mississippi Valley State scored one run in the bottom of the first inning and proceeded to cling to that lead all the way, eliminating Chattanooga, 1-0 in game four of the NCAA Softball Tuscaloosa Regional. The game was delayed nearly four hours due to inclement weather earlier in the day.
The only score of the game came when Haleigh Eubanks drove in Rashundra Brass. The two teams combined for five hits on the night. MVSU's Lisa Jansen came away with the win, improving to 15-7 on the season while Chattanooga's Brooke Loudermilk took the loss, dropping to 8-3.
The win was the first NCAA tournament victory for the Devilettes since 2004.
Mississippi Valley State returns to action Sunday at 11 a.m. vs. Texas in an elimination game. The winner of that game will face Alabama at 1:30 a.m. in the regional championship game.
ALABAMA 12, MVSU 3
Mississippi Valley State lost to Alabama 12-3 in their NCAA Softball Tournament opener.
Alabama started fast, taking advantage of three MVSU errors to take an 8-0 lead after one inning.
The third-ranked Crimson Tide added four runs in the fourth to lead 12-0.
Mississippi Valley State scored in the fifth inning. A two-run double by Angelica Wade put the Devilettes on the board. Courtney Carson added the final run for MVSU, scoring on a wild pitch.
The Devilettes will face Tennessee-Chattanooga Saturday at 4 p.m. in an elimination game.
