Still on the Move: Darlene Stowers Fighting for the LPGA Spot

By Antoinette Miller

On A Focused Journey Towards A Career As A Pro Golfer.

A natural athlete, Stowers has come a long way when it comes to sports, participating in track and field, cheerleading, volleyball and basketball in high school. She earned a full scholarship to Texas Southern University in Houston majoring in accounting and joined the N.A.I.A All-American team.  Furthermore, in the mid 80’s she played professionally as a member of the Women’s American Basketball Association (W.A.B.A).  Later, when the league folded and Stowers had the opportunity to play overseas, she decided to indulge in the sport that seems as though she was destined to play, golf.

“The game grabbed my attention after watching a women’s tournament on television. And interestingly enough after my car was stolen; the police officer by the name of Charles Mitchell, who came to the scene, was actually a golfer.  He ended up giving me some of my first lessons,” expressed Stowers.

Today at 48, with a handicap of 3, Stowers, like many players has gone through great lengths towards becoming a full time player.  Her once a month commutes from Tampa to the San Francisco Bay area working as a GE Contractor, only allows her to practice and play  in the evenings, after working 8 to 10 hour days.

If she’s in California you can find her on just about any golf course, but if you catch her in the Sunshine state, she'll probably be at her home course, Rogers Park.  Consequently, though there are challenges that concur in going pro and touring, Stowers believes that strength and support will carry her all the way to the top.

“I have devoted eighteen years to this game with an undying passion and strong perseverance. I have learned through trial and error that in order to become your best at what you do you must position yourself to perform...” reads a line from a proposal she has drafted to raise funds.

The proposal is a strong proactive approach that Stowers has taken to accomplishing her goals.  She is making it available to those who are interested in sponsoring her and the many expenses related to competing: tournament entry fees, travel & lodging, daily practice rounds, fitness and training expenses, swing coach, caddie, and other necessities.

It’s an excellent tool, outlining her needs for financial support and accomplishments in the game.

“The Friendraiser”, as she has coined it, has been sent to friends and family who believe in her talent and ambitions. Her determination surely has set her on a track to success and more great things.  Currently, Titleist is her equipment sponsor (balls, gloves, hats, and clubs) and she proudly lets it be know that she is debt free in preparation for any opportunities that arise.

With an average drive of 255 yards, she is a powerhouse player.  Stowers’ also has a big heart and dedication that drives her passion for helping young people, working for the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation for four years as a Junior Golf Instructor and Director of Junior Golf.  “I have a lot to offer and will soon have my own foundation no matter what hurdles I will have to jump.  But in the mean time, I would like to become a premier force on the women’s tours so that I may inspire and direct others to dream big and then make it happen. The things that I do with my life now, are not all about me, but it is about our youth”, states Stowers.

For anyone who can relate to her struggle, and would like to speak with Ms. Stowers or contribute to her goal please feel free to personally contact Darlene Stowers at Darlene.Stowers@ge.com or visit www.DarleneStowers.com.   She will be waiting to hear from each of you.
