Mississippi Valley State guard Kanesha Smith has been voted the Division I Women’s National Rookie of the Year, as announced Tuesday by Heritage Sports Radio Network.

Smith, a 5-9 freshman from Sanhill, MS, averaged 8.4 points and 4.9 points per game in helping the Devilettes to the semifinals of the 2009 SWAC Tournament. Smith was also named as the SWAC Freshman of the Year this season. Mississippi Valley State fans set the stage with over 11,000 votes for Smith.
