With three games on tap in SWAC Women's Basketball, SWAC teams went 1-2 on the evening. Alcorn State garnered a road win while Alabama State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff fell in non-conference action.
Alcorn State 66, Nicholls State 56
Corneshia Hollis had 16 points and three steals as the Lady Braves garnered a ten-point win on the road. Brittany Myatt had 13 points, five rebounds and three steals as the Lady Braves found a needed win on the night.
Maria Marshall and Ashley Hawkins each chipped in with 10 points. Alcorn State shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of action as they built a 42-25 halftime lead.
While the Alcorn State shooting touch diminished in the second half (31.8 percent), the Lady Braves were able to hold on to their manufactured lead and hold on for the win.
UAB 51, Alabama State 47
Leading by one point at intermission (19-18) and up by six midway through the second period, the Lady Hornets of Alabama State fell to the UAB Blazers 51-47 in the second game of the UAB Invitational at Bartow Arena Monday night.
Erica Lumpkin led the Lady Hornets (1-6) with 14 points - including two key three-pointers that gave Alabama State that extended the lead in the second half. However, several costly ASU turnovers and some clutch free-throw shooting by UAB denied the Lady Hornets their second win of the season.
L'Teisha Holloway and Tandria Milton each had eight points for Alabama State while shanice Merritt had six points, six rebounds and two blocks for the team.
For UAB, Amanda Peterson led three players in double-figures with 13 points. Tamike Dukes added 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Alabama State moves on to face Louisiana-Lafayette in the consolation contest of the UAB Invitational. ULL lost 68-58 toGeorgia State earlier in the day.
North Carolina 105, Univ. Arkansas-Pine Bluff 49
Ciara Shields had nine points and 12 rebounds to lead the Lady Lions, but 36 turnovers led to a defeat at the hands of #5 North Carolina Monday night.
Jonae Prince-Coleman had nine points and two steals while Nneka Louison finished with seven points and an assist off the bench. Shay Holmes tallied six points, seven rebounds and two blocks in the game.
