The final of three SWAC tennis roundups concluded on Sunday and the stage is now set for the 2010 SWAC Tennis Championship next month.
With a 5-2 win over Alcorn State on Sunday, the defending champion Lady Tigers claimed the #1 seed heading into the championship tournament. Both teams came into the match with identical 6-1 records as J-State (7-1 SWAC) was able to overcome the Lady Braves and secure the #1 position and a first-round bye. Alcorn State (6-2 SWAC) gets the #2 seed with the loss.
Alabama A&M (4-4 SWAC) defeated Mississippi Valley State 7-0 in earlier action on Sunday and leaves the tournament with the #3 seed to round out the Eastern women's bracket. Both Alabama State (2-6 SWAC) and Mississippi Valley State (0-8) were eliminated from the championship.
Western division women's qualifiers include: #1-Southern (8-0), #2 Prairie View A&M (5-3), and #3 Grambling State (3-5).
On the men's side, Alcorn State edged Jackson State 4-3 to secure the #1 seed in the tournament. The Braves finish with a 5-2 SWAC slate and will look to defend its 2009 title in the upcoming tournament. With a 3-4 conference record J-State nabs the #2 seed, while Alabama State claimed the #3 slot in Saturday's action.
Also on Sunday, Alabama A&M (1-6 SWAC) posted a 7-0 win over Mississippi Valley State (0-7 SWAC). Both teams failed to qualify for next month's championship.
Western division men's qualifiers are: #1-Arkansas-Pine Bluff (7-0), #2-Grambling State (5-2), #3-Prairie View A&M (5-2).
The 2010 SWAC Tennis Championship is set for April 16 -18 in Alexandria, LA. Only the top three teams in each division qualify for the championship tournament.
