ALEXANDRIA, LA - Jackson State’s men’s golf team erased an 11-shot deficit in the final round to win the 2009 SWAC Golf Championship at Links on the Bayou Golf Course.
The Tigers saved their best for last, shooting a final round 2-over par 290, their best round of the tournament, in rallying to win its second straight men’s golf championship and 21st SWAC golf title.
“The kids came out and played with a purpose today and got a little bit of help from Alabama State, which played unbelievably well the first two days,” said Jackson State head coach Eddie Payton, the SWAC Women’s and Men’s Golf Coach of the Year who’s teams won both team titles for the second consecutive year and 32nd overall golf title. “When you play three freshmen and a junior, you never know what you are going to get on a day like this. They played like I thought they would when I recruited them.”
One of those freshmen, Clay Myers posted a tournament-low round 4-under 68, with six birdies on his round. He made four birdies on the back nine, including birdies on 15, 16 and 17 in shooting a bogey-free 32.
Alabama State could not maintain its two-day lead, shooting 304 in the final round, despite the efforts of John Montgomery, who was both the Freshman and Tournament Low Medalist. He shot a 3-under par 69 on the final day and was one of just two golfers (Texas Southern’s Devaughn Robinson) with two sub-par rounds in the tournament. Montgomery finished with an even-par 216.
Robinson, who finished tied for second with a 1-over 217, sandwiched a pair of 71s around a second-day 75 to help Texas Southern finish third.
