GAME 11 – Alcorn State 7, Texas Southern 1

 

Alcorn State keeps its hot streak alive as the Braves defeat Texas Southern 7-1.

 

The two teams will play again Saturday at Noon in an elimination game.

 

The game was delayed nearly three hours due to rain in the third inning with Alcorn State leading 3-1. The Braves broke the game open in the sixth. Kenneth Rowan’s two-run double scored Edgar Alvarez and Eduardo  Gonzalez. Rowan later scored on an error to give the Braves a 6-1 lead.

 

Joshua Brumfield (4-0) went the distance for the Braves (27-18), allowing only a first-inning run and four hits.

Texas Southern (24-28) had its six-game SWAC Tournament win streak snapped.  

 

 

 

GAME 10 - Grambling State 15, Jackson State 1

 

Grambling State scored runs in all but one inning in eliminating Jackson State 15-1 (7 innings) in the 2009 SWAC Tournament.

 

Grambling State (16-36) scored single runs in the first and second innings, but broke the game open with five runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth in winning for the second time in the tournament.

 

Anthony Clifton, O.J. Simmons and Chris Wolfe each had three RBI for Grambling State, who had just eight hits. GSU took advantage of 11 Jackson State walks.

 

Jackson State finished the season 36-21.

 

GAME 9 - Alcorn State 3, UAPB 1 

Alcorn State defeated University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3-1 in an elimination game of the 2009 SWAC Baseball Tournament.

 

The Braves (27-18) advance to face Texas Southern at 3 p.m. today.

 

Trailing 1-0, the Braves scored in the sixth inning on Rodney Warren's two-run single to center field, scoring Joshua Brumfield and Adrian Bowens. Warren went 3-for-4 to lead the Alcorn State offensive attack.

 

Collin Arnold (6-5) won his second game of the tournament, this time as a starter. He went the distance, scattering nine hits while allowing one run, walking none and striking out three.

 

Gvona Turner and Zac Varnell each had two hits for UAPB (21-25), which scored in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Earnest Horton.
