Texas Southern and Southern remained undefeated after Day 2 of the 2009 SWAC Baseball Tournament.

GAME 8 - Southern 5, Grambling State 2

 

The Jaguars (27-14) advance to face the Jackson State-Grambling State winner at 6 p.m. Friday. Grambling (15-36) and Jackson State will square off at Noon Friday in an elimination game.

 

Southern never trailed in the game. They took the lead in the fourth on Greg Whitfield hit a RBI single and added a run in the fifth on Frazier Hall’s RBI groundout for a 2-0 lead.

 

Leading 2-1, the Jaguars added a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth inning in defeating Grambling for the fifth time in six meetings this season.

 

Jarrett Maloy went the distance, allowing two runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out eight.

 

Grambling State scored in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Sam Keller and added a run in the ninth on an error.

 

 

 

GAME 7 - Texas Southern 6, UAPB 0

The defending champion Texas Southern Tigers shutout Univ. Arkansas-Pine Bluff 6-0 in Game 7 of the 2009 SWAC Baseball Tournament.

 

Texas Southern (24-27) advances to face the Alcorn State-Univ. Arkansas-Pine Bluff winner Friday at 3 p.m. UAPB (21-24) plays Alcorn State Friday at 9 a.m. in an elimination game.

 

The Tigers scored in the fourth on an RBI single by David Arrendondo. Brandon Mikell's RBI double in the seventh gave TSU a 2-0 lead. Charles Derkowski's three-run homer in the eighth inning broke the game open.

 

Ehren Moreno scattered nine hits but did not allow a run as Texas Southern has posted back-to-back shutouts and has won six consecutive SWAC Tournament games dating back to 2008.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

GAME 6 - Jackson State 17, Alabama A&M 7

 

Jackson State combined for 16 runs in the final six innings to beat Alabama A&M 17-7 in an elimination game in the 2009 SWAC Baseball Tournament.

 

Trailing 6-3, the Tigers (35-20) scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Jackson State had five hits in the inning and, aided by two Bulldog errors, took a 10-6 lead. Jamaal Thelwell hit a two-run homer, and Fred Atkins and Jerome Tyes had RBI singles in the inning.

 

JSU added three runs in the sixth on bases-clearing double by Willie Wesley.

 

Jerome Tyes had three hits to lead the 14-hit attack of the Tigers, who will play the Southern-Grambling State loser Friday at noon.

 

Alabama A&M (14-31) came out swinging, scoring five in the first inning and one in the second to lead 6-1. However, the Bulldogs only had two hits in the final seven innings.

  

GAME 5 - Alcorn State 8, Mississippi Valley State 7 

Kenneth Rowan's two-run homer capped Alcorn State's five-run eighth inning rally and lifted the Braves to an 8-7 win over Mississippi Valley State in an elimination game of the 2009 SWAC Tournament.

 

Alcorn State (26-18) advances to play the Univ. Arkansas-Pine Bluff - Texas Southern loser at 9 a.m. Friday.

 

Trailing 7-3 in the eighth, Alcorn State's first five batters scored. Joel DelGrande's RBI single and Eduardo Gonzales' two-run triple brought the Braves to within one at 7-6. Rowan then homered to left field to give Alcorn State the lead for good.

 

Collin Arnold (5-5) got the win in relief, pitching the final two innings. Arnold retired Mississippi Valley State 1-2-3 in the ninth with two strikeouts, including striking out Hogan Barnes to end the game.

 

Valley had taken a 5-3 lead after six innings.Trailing 3-1 after four, the Delta Devils scored three runs in the top of the sixth on a bases-clearing double by Sean Bard.

 

Mississippi Valley State (20-29) had extended to a 7-3 lead in the top of the eighth before Alcorn State's comeback against MVSU losing pitcher Justin Bautista (2-3).
