BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mississippi Valley State Athletics is sad to announce that former administrator, instructor and track and field coach William Brown has passed away.

Brown attended Alcorn State University and earned a degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation. While at Alcorn, he was a walk on defensive lineman for the Braves.

In 1968, Brown joined the faculty and staff at Mississippi Valley State. His tenure until retirement in 1997, included serving as head track and field coach, assistant football coach, assistant professor of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and Interim Chairperson of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

Brown’s men track and field teams in 1980 and 1981 won the outdoor track meet for the National Intercollegiate Athletic Association in Houston and Abilene, Texas. The championships served as the first national championships in the school’s history. In 1978, he became an instructor with the Mississippi Alcohol and Safety, Education Program of Mississippi State University. He was an advocate recruiter of minority teachers for the state of Mississippi, until his retirement in 1999.

In 1982, Brown was chosen as a United States Ambassador Olympic trainer/coach for the Bangladeshi Olympic Track team. Brown proudly spoke of the many students and athletes he taught, trained, coached and mentored. It is estimated that over the course of his career, Brown impacted the lives of over 3,000 student-athletes. Many of which followed in his footsteps as an educator and mentor; while others found success as professional athletes, physicians, lawyers, engineers, accountants, mayors, superintendents, elected officials, social workers, policemen, firemen, plumbers, electricians, entrepreneurs, blues singers and one weather girl.

Brown was initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi by way of the Gamma Phi Chapter in 1952 and was instrumental in the chartering of the Zeta Zeta Chapter on the campus at MVSU.

Brown was inducted in to the Alcorn State University Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Mississippi Valley State University Hall of Fame in 2007.
