Track and Field Athletes of the Week: March 23

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alabama State's Kaila Lewis, Prairie View's Keon Campbell and Sunne Rodriguez-Weems, and Jackson State's Ky'Bria Spell were recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference as Track and Field Athletes of the Week for competition on March 16-18.

Men's Track Athlete of the Week

Campbell had a hand in four top-3 finishes over the weekend as Prairie View competed at the Texas Southern Relays and the University of Houston's Cougar Spring Break Invitational. Campbell won the men's 100-meter dash at the TSU Relays -- setting a new conference-best mark in the process with a 10.32-second result -- and helped the 4x100m relay team finish second at the TSU Relays and third at the Cougar Spring Break Invitational. Campbell was also part of the Panthers' 4x200m relay team that was second at the TSU Relays.

Rodriguez-Weems won the Pole Vault event at the Texas Southern Relays and finished third in the same event during the Houston Cougar Spring Break Invitational. The freshman cleared 4.75m at Houston, tying a collegiate personal best mark in the discipline. Dating back to the 2017 Indoor Track and Field Championships, Rodriguez-Weems has won the Pole Vault event in three of his last four meets.

Lewis had a standout performance during the 66th Annual Texas Southern Relays, as she won two individual events and helped the Lady Hornets' 4x100m relay team claim victory as well. Lewis clocked in at 11.71 seconds -- a personal best in the event -- to take the top spot on the podium in the 100m, and ran a 24.26-second time in winning the 200m dash.The 4x100m team won with a 45.53-second time.

Spell set a meet record during the Louisiana Classic at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette this past weekend, shattering the discus throw record by more than two meters. Spell made a toss of 55.15 meters to win the event, breaking the old mark of 53.11 meters, which had stood for nearly seven years. It was one of three top-10 results for the senior, as she finished eighth in the shot put and ninth in the hammer throw.
