Lady Hornets' Lovett, 4x100 relay team qualify for NCAAs
TAMPA, Fla. - Alabama State will send four athletes to Eugene, Oregon as Lady Hornets hurdler Shamaria Lovett as well as the 4x100-meter relay team -- consisting of Kaila Lewis, Desiree Horn, Charminiqu Hackney and Lovett -- have qualified for the NCAA Division I National Championship meet.
Lovett blazed a personal-best 57.30 (57.296) in the 400m hurdles, good for 10th best out of the final 12 qualifiers from the East region. Teammate Kyana Evans advanced to the quarterfinal round as well, timing a 58.87 in the event.
Hackney -- who also competed individually in the 100m and 200m dash -- advanced through the quarterfinals of the 100m before missing out on a national championship spot by 0.07 of a second with a time of 11.30.
The Lady Hornets ended the preliminaries on a high note, as the 4x100m relay team -- which claimed the last spot available on the declaration list of East preliminary teams -- clocking a 44.72-second mark to not only qualify for nationals, but to earn second place in its respective heat.
Jackson State's Justin Thomas and Azariah Foster each advanced to the quarterfinal portion of the preliminary round in the 100m dash and 400m hurdles, respectively, with Thomas ultimately falling 0.07 of a second short of a spot at nationals. Laval Davis of Mississippi Valley State also advanced to the quarterfinals of his event -- the 400m dash -- with a personal-best time of 46.25 seconds, ultimately falling short of his quest to earn a bid at nationals.
The NCAA National Championships will take place June 6-9.
