Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week: April 24

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alcorn State sprinters Kemar Cumberbatch and Jessica Ransom, Texas Southern jumper Harvey Kendall and Alabama A&M thrower Alexis Lucas have been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Track and Field athletes of the week for their performances in competition from April 20-21.

Men's Track Athlete of the Week - Kemar Cumberbatch, Alcorn State
So. | Sprints/Relays | 6-0 | Bridgetown, Barbados

During the LSU Alumni Gold invitational, Cumberbatch won the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 21.35 seconds. The effort is a season-best for the sophomore, and it is also his first collegiate victory in the event.

Women's Track Athlete of the Week - Jessica Ransom, Alcorn State
So. | Sprints/Relays | Houston, Texas

Ransom broke her own school record in the 400-meter dash as she ran a 53.76 to finish eighth overall and first among SWAC competition. Her previous best was a 54.64, set at the Mississippi State Bulldog Relays on March 23. She also ran the second leg of the women’s 4x400-meter relay team that placed 11th overall with a combined time of 3:46.17, a season best for the Lady Braves.

Men's Field Athlete of the Week - Harvey Kendall, Texas Southern
Jr. | Jumps | Grandview, Mo.

Kendall collected two top-5 showings in the J. Fred Duckett Twilight Invitational at Rice University this past weekend. The junior finished fourth in the high jump after clearing 1.98 meters (6-06.00 feet) in competition. Kendall then finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 14.22 meters (46-08.00 feet).

Women's Field Athlete of the Week - Alexis Lucas, Alabama A&M
So. | Throws | 5-1 | Pensacola, Fla.

Lucas was a three-time winner this past weekend at the Alabama A&M Duals, as she won the javelin throw with a throw of 27.02 meters (89-03.00 feet), claimed the discus throw with a heave of 36.50 meters (119-09.00 feet). During the hammer throw, Lucas cleared 41.80 meters (137-02.00 feet) on her way to first place.
