SWAC athletes set for NCAA Regionals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A total of 31 track and field standouts from the Southwestern Athletic Conference are set to take part in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships within the East and West Regionals.

The regional meets are set to run through May 27. The East Regionals are hosted by the University of Kentucky, and the West Regionals will take place at the University of Texas.

Alabama State is sending 16 athletes across seven events to Lexington, Ky. for regional action. Leading the way is Kaila Lewis, who qualified for the 100m and 200m events. Joining her is Monica Howard. Additionally, the women's 4x100m relay team of Lewis, Desiree Horn, Howard and Charminique Hackney qualified.

For the Hornet men, Josh Davis and Devin O'Neal both qualified in the men's 200m while the men's 4x100 team of Davis, Justin Davis, O'Neal and Norris Spike qualified as well. On the field, Jamie Brown will be among the top 48 participating in the long jump.

Alabama A&M will have four athletes in action as Charrie Dennard (long jump, triple jump), DeTorrian Green (100m, 200m), Alex Ward (400m hurdles) and Tre' Williamns (400m hurdles) will represent the Bulldogs. Dennard is ranked in the top 10 nationally in the long jump.

Jackson State's Joshua Hilliard will take part in the 100m hurdles.

Out west, Prairie View A&M's Deonca Bookman is a double qualifier in the 100m hurdles and the 400m hurdles. Fellow Lady Panther Nekiesha Bailey will participate in the long jump. For the PVAMU men, Keon Campbell and Samuel Omera (100m and 200m), Logan Williams (110m hurdles, 400m hurdles) and the 4x100m relay team will also compete at Texas.

Texas Southern's Breana Dockery (women's 400m dash), D'Andre Lewis (800m run), Maliek Kendall (110m hurdles) and Mykele Young Sanders (400m hurdles) are also heading to regionals, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff will be represented by Briana Burke in the women's long jump.
