COLUMBIA, S.C. - Alabama State Track and Field finished with 23 top-ten finishes during the 22nd edition of the Weems Baskin Invitational hosted by the South Carolina Gamecocks on the Cregger Track in Columbia, S.C.

Highlighting the meet for the Hornets was Chaaka Trahan winning the Men's Long Jump Open with a leap of 7.22m. Maurice Buchanan was third at 7.21m.

On the women's side, Kristen Thompson won the Shot Put Open with a toss of 12.39m. Arion Span had third-place showings in the 1500m (4:42.08) and 3000m (10:45.01) runs. Both the men's and women's 4x100m relay squads earned top-5 placings, with the women earning fourth and the men claiming third.

84th PV Relays (Prairie View A&M)
Prairie View, Texas Southern Men

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Prairie View A&M’s men and women won their home meet, earning several first-place results during the 84th running of the PV Relays. 

In men's action, Levante Williams and Harold Rodriguez Pavon finished first and second in the 5000m run with times of 16:26.26 and 17:16.04 respectively. Logan Williams finished first in the 400m hurdles (52.58) and 110m hurdles (14.34). Samuel Omera finished first in the 100m dash with a time of 10.51. Aaron Austin won the 1500m run, crossing the finish line 4:18.21.

On the women's side, Husniyyah Rogers and  Jakerria Hughes took home first and second place in the 400m dash (57.99, 59.87). JoAnna Benavidez won the 1500m run (5:10.45), Aimee Hernandez and Jovana Espinoza placed first and second in the 5000m run (20:04.11, 20:34.21) and Deonca Bookman finished first in both the 400m hurdles (59.91) and the 100m hurdles (14.28).

For Texas Southern, who finished third on the men’s side, Darius Birden (48.78) and D.J. Kirby (49.07) finished one-two in the 400m dash. Mykele Young Sanders was second in the 110m hurdles (14.77), and the Tigers took three of the top six spots in the 800m run.

Spring Break Invitational (Univ. of North Florida)
Alabama A&M

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Alabama A&M’s Adam Robinson won the men’s hammer throw at the North Florida Spring Break Invitational.

Robinson cleared 43.56m and teammate Kessy Bell was second with his 42.41m effort. Bell also finished eighth in the shot at 12.59 meters. Ezekiel Rose had a solid day in the jumps. He was third in the high jump at 1.95 meters and fourth in the triple jump with a 13.89 leap.

DeTorrian Green took fourth in the 200 at 21.37 and he ran on the fifth-place 4x400 relay (3:20.61) with Alex Ward, Tre' Williams and Sequion Hill. Williams also pulled in a fifth-place showing in the 400 hurdles at 54.33. Ward was sixth in the 400 with a 48.37 clocking and finished eighth in the 400 hurdlers in 54.92.

For the Lady Bulldogs, Charrie Dennard and Joi Ballard each had a pair of top-10 showings. Dennard took second in the long jump with a leap of 5.88 meters, falling just .04-meter short of the winning effort. She was fourth in the triple jump at 12.31 meters. However, it is the best jump in the SWAC this season.

Ballard was clocked in 24.46 seconds to finish fifth in the 200, just .03 second slower than her best this season. She recorded a 57.16 time for a seventh-place showing in the 400. Ballard also was the lead and Dennard was the anchor in the fifth-place 4x400 team with Taylor Sunkett and Akia Slaughter. The quartet was timed in 3:57.39.

A top five showing went to Alexis Lucas, who brought home fifth place in the discus with her throw of 41.58 meters.

Joe Walker Invitational (Ole Miss)
Jackson State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff

OXFORD, Miss. - Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Wade Gardner won the men's 800m run during Ole Miss' Joe Walker Invitational with a time of 1:51.44, less than four-tenths ahead of the pack.

It was one of a handful of top-5 showings for the Golden Lions. Travis Bibbs put up a 14.61m leap in the triple jump to finish second. Rodney Griffin (48.66) was third in the 400m dash, and Rasheed McAlpin was third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.33. UAPB's relay teams had top-4 results, with the 4x100m squad gaining third place and the 4x400m relay team finishing fourth.

For Jackson State, Murray Washington won his section of the 400m, finishing sixth overall. Azariah Foster (14.64) and Joshua Hilliard (14.7) earned top-10 showings in the 110m hurdles as well.

On the women's side, JSU's Akeilia Knight finished sixth in the 800m run. UAPB's Takia Taylor was sixth in the 400m dash, and Briana Burke was ninth in the long jump, winning her section with a 5.53m leap.


Victor Lopez Classic (Rice University)
Southern, Grambling State, Texas Southern Women

HOUSTON - Grambling State's Jonathon Sawyer won the men's 400m dash at Rice University's Victor Lopez Classic, clocking in at 46.81. He was also fifth in the 200m dash with a time of 21.83.

Andre Hewitt finished seventh in the 110m hurdles as well. The GSU 4x100m relay quartet was fourth Grambling also secured top-10 showings in field events, with David Parker finishing eighth in the high jump and Rudolph Valentine claiming ninth in the triple jump.

Nikole Haroon was third in the women's 400m dash for Texas Southern (55.88), and Southern's Terralicia Mercadel (56.07) was fourth. SUBR's Rykeisha Bankhead and Tessa Toney each won their respective sections of the 400m hurdles.

Texas Southern's women's 4x100m relay squad finished third in competition, and TSU's Sydney Edwards was fourth in the high jump (1.67m). Grambling's Kenya Wheeler was fourth overall in the discus throw event.
