BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alcorn State's Shameka Grover set a new meet record in the women's 200m dash as the Lady Braves won the women's team competition during the Emory Crossplex Invitational Sunday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Grover won the 200m dash in 24.81 seconds, two hundredths of a second better than the previous record set in 2013. Southern's Camryn Hawkins was second (24.9). Alcorn's Jada Hunt (25.04) finished third, and teammate Mya Lloyd (25.08) was fourth. Southern's Terralicia Mercadel won the women's 400m dash with a time of 57.14, and Lady Brave Jessica Ransom (57.93) was third. The Jaguars men and women both finished third in respective team standings during the event.

Alcorn's DeKari Courtney finished fourth in the women's 60m hurdles (9.17) and cleared 1.57m in the high jump for another fourth-place finish. Also in the women's 60m hurdles, Jackson State's Jahelle Cato (9.18) and Khadijah Qualls (9.26) claimed fifth and sixth, respectively, and Alcorn State's Justice Edwards was seventh with a time of 9.28 seconds.

Euricka Hardy won the women's 60m dash for Alcorn, running it in 7.58 seconds. Southern's Hawkins (7.72), Nia Williams (7.73) and Brandolyn Walker (7.76) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Mississippi Valley's women's distance relay team  -- Derica Pitters, Iyanna Alexander, Kemei Scholasticah, Najee Green -- finished third with a time of 12:56.63. Mercadel and Hawkins anchored a Southern 4x400m relay team that included Ashley Miles and Raelynn Price en route to the Lady Jaguars winning the event in 3:52.47. Alcorn State was second, and MVSU was third.

In field events, Southern Jamira Russ made an 18.75m toss -- which would have been a new meet record if not for a 19.26m toss by the event's winner --  in the weight throw to finish second. Teammate Faith Estelle was seventh (14.14m). Southern also had a winner in the long jump as Vashti Hannah (5.58m) beat out Alcorn State's Chinyere Mbonu (5.41m; 2nd) and Justice Edwards (5.33m; 3rd) to win it. MVSU's Alexandria Francis (5.09m) finished seventh.

Jackson State's Sydni Gilmore (10.97m) finished fourth in the women's triple jump.

On the men's side, Southern's Amari Calvillo-Tatum was fourth in the men's 400m dash (50.38). Alcorn's Lane Ross was seventh (50.69), and he also finished third in the 60m hurdles (8.36). Fellow Brave Josias Jean claimed fifth (8.71) in the same event.

Southern sprinter Abraham Gordwin (6.86) won the 60m dash, and Alcorn's Jeremy Gamble (7.00) and Harold Horton (7.04) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Mississippi Valley's Laval Davis (21.98) finished second in the 200m dash.

The Jaguars 4x400m relay team -- Gordwin, Calvillo-Tatum, Isaac Brown and Artis McCoy -- won its race with a time of 3:23.54. Alcorn State was second (3:23.95) and Mississippi Valley was third (3:25.11).

Charles Clark of Southern (15.18m) finished fourth in the weight throw, and teammate Skyler Prol (14.16m) was sixth. Prol also finished second in the shot put (14.24m). Darius Major (6.82m) finsihed fifth for Alcorn State in the long jump. Southern's Desmond Thomas cleared 4.55m to earn third place in the pole vault. Delta Devils leaper Jamenta Shaw put up a 13.42m mark on his way to finishing fourth in the triple jump.
