Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week: Jan. 16
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alabama State distance runners Gregory Thigpen and Arion Span, jumper Jamie Brown, and Southern thrower Jamira Russ have been recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference as indoor track and field athletes of the week following their performances in competition from Jan. 12-13.
Men's Track Athlete of the Week - Gregory Thigpen, Alabama State

Thigpen led all of the student-athletes in action for Alabama State, taking the top spot in the 5000-meter run at UAB's Blazer Invitational with a time of 16:31.11. The senior also finished in the top 10 in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:45.6 during the meet.
Women's Track Athlete of the Week - Arion Span, Alabama State

Span won the women's 5,000m run (18:42.96) and notched a fourth-place finish in the women's 800m run (2:15.51) during the Vulcan Invitational Saturday. On Friday's Blazer Invitational at UAB, she claimed eighth place in the women's mile run (5:09.90). With her performances, Span now has the No. 1 times in each of those events among conference athletes.
Men's Field Athlete of the Week - Jamie Brown, Alabama State

Brown picked up two top-4 placings at the Blazer and Vulcan Invitationals hosted by UAB this past weekend. Brown cleared 7.20m (23-07.5 feet) on his way to a fourth-place finish in the long jump during the Blazer Invitational. The following day in the Vulcan Invitational, Brown put up a 14.79m leap (48-06.25 feet) in the triple jump, good for third place. He also earned a top-15 result in the high jump with a 1.90m measurement (6-02.75 feet). Brown is the top-ranked athlete in the triple jump and long jump following his most recent outings, and also is No. 3 on the SWAC's high jump performance lists.
Women's Field Athlete of the Week - Jamira Russ, Southern

Russ claimed victory in the women's weight throw during the McNeese Indoor Invitational #1 this past weekend. Russ, who entered the competition with the top mark among SWAC throwers in the event, improved on her No. 1 ranking by nearly three feet, making a toss of 18.38m (60-03-75 feet) to win the competition. Additionally, Russ finished fourth in the shot put thanks to a throw of 12.10m (39-08.5 feet). This is her second-straight athlete of the week honor.
