BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -  Alabama State's Arion Span won the women's 5,000m run (18:42.96) and notched a fourth-place finish in the women's 800m run (2:15.51) during the Vulcan Invitational Saturday.

Fellow Lady Hornet Sade Lavallias finished third in the 5,000m (19:24.31). Ariayanna Val collected a sixth-place result in the women's long jump (5.40m).

Alabama A&M's Danice Loney (3.05m) was fourth in the women's pole vault. For the AAMU men, DeTorrian Green clocked a 21.50 in the 200m dash to finish fifth, just ahead of Alabama State's Josh Davis (21.50). Green also finished sixth in the men's 60m dash, crossing the finish line in 6.81 seconds. The Bulldogs' 4x400m relay team finished sixth thanks to a time of 3:22.02.

Raheem Skinner of Jackson State claimed eighth-place in the 800m run (1:56.88).

Joshua Coffelt claimed a spot on the podium for Alabama State with a third-place result in the men's 5,000m run (16:31.34). Teammate Jamie Brown earned third place in the triple jump with a leap of 14.77m, beating out Jackson State's Jauvany Hyde, who finished sixth with a jump of 14.63m.

Hornet hurler Caesar Kemp finished eighth in the shot put with a toss of 15.41m.

Ted Nelson Invitational (Texas A&M; Jan. 12-13)

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Alexis Gray of Texas Southern set a new meet record in winning the women's 60m dash (7.41) and also won the women's 200m dash during the Texas A&M-hosted Ted Nelson Invitational on Friday. Gray clocked a 24.20 in the 200m.

Texas Southern's men's 4x400m relay team -- Mykele Young Sanders, Bronshaye Bolden, Darius Birden, and Kenneth White -- also won, clocking a 3:16.08.

Additionally, Nekiesha Bailey of Prairie View finished first in the high jump competition marking a season best of 1.75m, ranking 12th in the nation.

Also for Prairie View, Deonca Bookman finished seventh overall in the 400 meters with a time of 58.04. Alana Williams posted a personal best time of 2:20.79 in the 800 finishing sixth overall, while teammate Dinah Murphy completed a time of 2:20.95 and a seventh place finish in the same event.

In the final relays of the day the Lady Panthers had two teams to perform at this meet which were the distant medley relay consisting of the team of Alysse Grogan, Husniyyah Rogers, Williams, and Joanna Benavidez. The ladies finished with a time of 13:59.03 and a fifth place finish.  In the 4x400 the team Sydnee Mitchell-Jemison, Takara Coleman, Murphy and Bookman placed fifth with a time of 3:54.74.

On the men’s side Samuel Omoera ran a season best time of 21.56 placing fourth in the 200 meters.  In the 400m William Polley placed fifth with a season best time of 49.06, his teammate Brandon Kirby placed 12th overall with a season best time of 49.89.

The men’s team concluded their meet with the 4x400 placing third overall with a time of 3:19.29. The relay consisted of Brandon Kirby, Carl Jordan, Logan Williams and Polley.

Also on Friday, Texas Southern's Roman Turner finished sixth in the 60m dash (6.90). Jorge Martinez finished third in the 5,000m run (15:28.91). Sanders (8.21) and Maliek Kendall (8.22) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the men's 60m hurdles.

Blazer Invitational (UAB; Jan. 12)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alabama State's Gregory Thigpen took the top spot in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:31.11. He finished just over two seconds ahead of Vincent Iangat of Jackson State, who also had Henry Kiplagat finished third.

The Hornets had several solid finishes in the meet led by Jamie Brown (fourth) in the long jump with a distance of 7.20 meters (23-07.50). Josh Davis finished seventh in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.80 seconds (just .05 seconds from fourth), while Caesar Kemp finished seventh in the shot put with a distance of 15.33 meters (50-03.50).

Thigpen also finished in the top 10 in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:45.65.

Meanwhile, on the women’s side, Desire’ Horn finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.63 meters (18-05.75) – just .03 meters from fourth. China Reed finished in the top 10 in a pair of events, finishing eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.63 meters (38-02.00) and 10th in the long jump with a distance of 5.34 meters (17-06.25).

Hayley Spears finished sixth in the 5000 meters for the Lady Hornets with a time of 20:38.28. while, Arion Span finishing eighth in the one-mile run with a time of 5:09.90. 

The 4x400-meter relay team finished 10th in the meet with a time of 3:56.29 to wrap up the day’s competition.

Also for Jackson State's men, Ryan Theyard cleared 14.00m to finish eighth in the long jump. Jauvany Hyde (6.85m) was eighth in the long jump.

Leonard Hilton Invitational (University of Houston; Jan. 12)

HOUSTON - Alcorn State’s Lane Ross had two top-5 finishes at Houston Leonard Hilton Invitational on Friday, as he finished third in the 400m dash (51.59) and fifth in the 60m hurdles (8.40).

Also for Alcorn State, Bralon Robinson and Kemar Cumberbatch reached the men's 60m finals. Robinson placed fourth with a time of 6.82, while Cumberbatch was seventh at 7.64. In the 200m dash, Jeremy Gamble took sixth in 22.81 and Harold Horton was eighth at 23.54. Texas Southern’s Marcus Caldwell (2:06.80) finished seventh in the 800m run, and Alcorn’s Peterson Saint-Cyrin timed a 2:10.00 to come in eighth.

The Braves were the only team to compete in the men's distance medley. The group of Jabari Thompson, Josias Jean, Saint-Cyrin, and Miles combined for an 11:53.24.

J'Koven Celestine had a jump of 6.94m (22-09.25 feet), good for sixth in the long jump. The Lady Braves were led by Jessica Ransom's fourth-place finish in the 400m dash (58.23) and Angelica Jacobs' fourth-place finish in the 800m run (2:26.27). Also, Dekari Courtney and Justice Edwards went fourth and fifth in the 60m hurdles with times of 9.27 and 9.37, respectively.

In the 4x400m relay, Alcorn's A and B teams squared off with Houston's two teams. The group of Hali Jones, Mya Lloyd, Dekari Courtney, and Ransom finished second in 4:16.42. Alcorn’s other relay team of Shameka Grover, Griffin, Edwards, and Shaquanda Hill was close behind at 4:23.10, good for third.

In the field events, Courtney leaped 1.53m (5-00.25 feet) to finish eighth.

McNeese Indoor Meet I (McNeese State; Jan. 12)
Grambling State

LAKE CHARLES, La. - Southern had an exceptional outing during the McNeese Indoor Meet I on Friday, as Jamira Russ cleared 18.38m (60-04) on her final toss to win the women's weight throw, Jeremy Bass won the men's weight throw with a toss of 14.48m (47-06.25), and Charles Clark (12.92m; 42-05) won the men's shot put.

Russ also finished fourth in the women's shot put (12.10; 39-08.75) behind Grambling's Furquani Al-Amin (12.45m; 40-10.5), who was third. Clark was second in the men's weight throw (13.82m; 45-04.5), and Bass was second in the shot put (12.32m; 40-05.25). Lewis London finished third in the men's weight throw (9.32m) and sixth in the shot put (10.85m).

Southern's men (3:27.29) and women (4:04.95) each won their 4x400m relay events, and Artis McCoy claimed victory in the 400m dash for the Jaguars with a time of 52.16

Desmond Thomas (4.45m) finished second in the men's pole vault for the Jaguars, and Grambling's Rudolph Valentine won the men's triple jump (13.07m). Valentine also came in second during the long jump (6.85m), and teammate Altany Wilson was third at 6.84m.

Also for the Southern women, Vashti Hannah won the long jump (5.61m) with teammate Dominique Dorsey claiming fourth (5.18m). Tiana Cephers (10.58m) won the triple jump event. Nia Williams (7.24) and Camryn Hawkins (7.26) finished second and third in the 55m dash. Terralicia Mercadel won the women's 600m run (1:42.22) with Tessa Toney (1:42.92) and Jalaysia Hebert (1:56.30) finishing second and fourth, respectively. Hawkins also finished second in the 200m dash.

Grambling's Breanna Wayne clocked an 8.86-second time in winning the women's 55m hurdles. Halima Chepkwony finished third in the women's one-mile run (5:45.81), and Takira Koonce finished third in the 200m dash (26.09).

On the men's side, Grambling's Jaden Johnson was third in the 200m dash (22.94). Lachavius Grimes was fifith with a 6.69 in the 55m dash. Hassan Chepkwony had two top-5 showings: a fifth-place result in the mile run (4:42.23) and a fourth-place result in the 3,000m run (9.07.51).
