Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week: Feb. 8
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Prairie View A&M's Deonca Bookman and Nekiesha Bailey, Mississippi Valley State's Jamenta Shaw, and Alabama State's Josh Davis have been selected by the Southwestern Athletic Conference as Track and Field Athletes of the Week for their outstanding performances in competition during Feb. 3-5.
Men’s Track Performer of the Week
Sophomore | Tallahassee, Fla.
Davis collected three top-4 finishes during the University of South Alabama Invitiational on Feb. 6. The sophomore clocked a personal-best 21.52-second time in the 200-meter dash, finishing second. He followed that up with a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash (6.82) and was a part of the Hornets' 4x400-meter relay unit that claimed fourth place with a 3:17.43, which ranks ASU No. 2 in the conference in the event on 2017 performance lists.
Men’s Field Performer of the Week
Mississippi Valley State
Freshman | Greenville, Miss.
Shaw claimed the first victory of his collegiate career, winning the men's triple jump competition during the University of South Alabama Invitational this past weekend. Shaw cleared 14.94m, which represents a collegiate best for the freshman, to hold off the rest of the field. He now ranks third in the conference in the discipline and is one of three athletes to have surpassed the 49-foot mark in the event.
Women’s Track Performer of the Week

Bookman won the women's 200-meter dash at the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational this past weekend, clocking in at 25.15 to claim the top spot. In what was an impressive meet for the junior sprinter, she also finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles and aided the Lady Panthers' 4x400-meter relay team in winning its meet as well. The relay squad's time of 3:52.50 is now the best mark by a SWAC quartet in the race this season.

Sophomore | Kansas City, Mo.
Bailey cleared 1.76m to earn the individual high jump title at the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational, beating out athletes from host school LSU, McNeese State and fellow SWAC institution Texas Southern. Bailey, who sits No. 1 in 2017 performance lists in the high jump among conference athletes, has finished in the top 4 in her event in five straight indoor meets dating back to last season.
