KMS Invitational (Jan. 29)
(Alcorn State, Alabama State, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley, Southern)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Southern's Jamira Russ won the women's weight throw during the KMS Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex on Jan. 29.
Russ claimed the event with a toss of 18.08m, beating out Jackson State's Ky'Bria Spells, who was second with a toss of 16.36m. Also on the women's side, Southern's Vashti Hannah was second in the triple jump (11.74m), and tied for fourth in the long jump. Alabama State's Desiree Horn finished third in the long jump.
Mississippi Valley's 4x400m women's relay team finished fifth, and the Devielettes' distance medley relay claimed second place. Monica Howard's (Alabama State) 8.71 was good for third in the women's 60m hurdles, and teammate Arion Span's 3000m run resulted in fourth place.
For the men, JSU's Joshua Hillard posted a third-place result in the 60m hurdles (8.12). Maurice Buchanan of Alabama State cleared 2.00m for a fourth-place finish in the high jump. Alcorn State's Darryl Jones finished fourth in the long jump (7.01m).
Houston Invitational (Houston; Jan. 27)
(Prairie View, Texas Southern)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Texas Southern's 4x400m men's relay team claimed victory during the Houston Invitational this past weekend, clocking a time of 3:21.49.
TSU's Tevin Kimble also took the long jump competition with a leap of 7.14m. For Prairie View's men, the Panthers' 4x400m relay team was third (3:23.97) and Sydney Holt-Washington finished fourth in the 200m dash.
In women's action, Prairie View's Deonca Bookman placed fourth in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles (8.75), and Nekiesha Bailey finished in second place clearing 1.75m in the high jump.
Breana Dockery and Alexis Gray of Texas Southern finished 1-2 in the women's 200m, with Dockery clocking a 24.94 in victory and Gray posting a time of 25.04 seconds. Dockery was also fifth in the women's 400m.
A-State Invitational/Multis (Arkansas State; Jan. 27)
(Grambling State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff)
JONESBORO, Ark. - Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Juwan Parker posted a 49.13 to win the 400m dash at the Arkansas State Invitational this weekend. Teammate Wade Garner was third (49.39).
Grambling State had multiple winners, as Hassan Chepkwony put up a 15:40.16 to win the men's 5000m run, and Altany Wilson won the men's triple jump (15.44m). Wilson was also fourth in the 55m dash. Lady Tiger Ja'lyn Simon won the women's 55m in 7.15 seconds. Grambling's Darlene Desmangles and Breanna Wayne were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the women's triple jump event.
UAPB's women finished fourth in the 4x400m relay (4:00.31).
