BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alcorn State point guard Alexus Freeman has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Women's Basketball Player of the Week following her standout efforts during games played from January 16-22.

Freeman averaged 18.0 points, 7.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game in leading the Lady Braves to victories over Alabama A&M and Alcorn State in their two games last week. The senior guard shot 12-28 (42.9 percent) from the field, including 5-7 (71.4 percent) from distance, and 7-8 (87.5 percent) from the free-throw line.

Against Alabama A&M on Jan. 20, she scored a game-high 16 points on 6-14 shooting from the floor, 3-4 from beyond the arc, and 1-2 at the line. She added three boards with five assists and a pair of steals in a complete-game effort.

In Monday’s win over Alabama State, the Navasota, Texas product netted 20 points as she went 6-14 on the night, 2-3 from long-range, and a perfect 6-6 at the charity stripe. She grabbed three boards with six steals and just missed out on the double-double with nine assists.

She has now reached double-digit points for the fifth consecutive game and eight of her last nine conference games. Freeman leads the conference in assist to turnover ratio (1.1) and ranks second in the league in assists (4.7 apg) and steals (4.2 spg). Through games played on Jan. 21, she ranks fifth nationally in total steals (74) and steals per game.
