Late Wednesday recap

Hawaii 72, Prairie View A&M 60

HONOLULU, Hawai’i – The Prairie View A&M University men’s basketball team lost at Hawai’i 72-60 Wednesday night at the Stan Sherriff Center.

Gary Blackston scored a season-high 27 points with seven rebounds and a season-high five steals, and Zachary Hamilton scored 19 and added five rebounds and four steals for the Panthers (2-6).

Prairie View A&M did not lead in the game, despite forcing two long droughts where Hawai’i (5-2) did not make a shot from the field. The Panthers made a season-high 12 steals, and converted 19 Rainbow Warrior turnovers into 20 points. PVAMU turned the ball over nine times, tied for the second-lowest total of the season.

After falling behind 9-0, a 12-3 run cut the deficit to one at 13-12 on a layup by Austin Starr with 13:35 to play in the first half. Prairie View A&M fell behind by as many at 15 at 28-13 with 8:38 to play until halftime. The Panthers cut the deficit to six before trailing 36-29 at intermission.

In the second half, it was an ebb and flow final 20 minutes as the Panthers would make runs only to have Hawai’i pull away to keep Prairie View A&M at bay. PVAMU continued to battle, cutting the deficit to four at 61-57 with 3:26 to play on a free throw by Hamilton but could get no closer.
