Prairie View A&M 71, Georgia State 56
Las Vegas, NV – Prairie View A&M men’s basketball won the ‘Battle Of The Panthers’, defeating Georgia State 71-56 in the Middleweight Bracket final of the MGM Resorts Main Events Tournament at T-Mobile Arena.
Gary Blackston posted his first double-double with game highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds along with four assists. Zachary Hamilton scored 17 points and added three assists, and Dennis Jones continued his solid play off the bench with 13 points.
Prairie View A&M shot 47 percent from the field (20-43), including a blistering 50 percent from three-point range (11-22) and 91 percent from the free throw line (20-22).
“I’m really proud of our young men,” PVAMU head coach Byron Smith. “I’m happy for our administration who work so hard to give us everything we need to be successful. Georgia State has established itself as one of the top mid-major programs in the country. That is our goal here at Prairie View A&M, and today’s win has us headed in that direction.”
There were six lead changes in the first five+ minutes of the game before Prairie View A&M (2-3) took the lead for good on a three pointer by Jones at 13-11 with just under 14 minutes to play in the first half. After Georgia State (3-2) of the Sun Belt Conference tied the score for the final time at 13-13, a three-pointer by Blackston gave PVAMU a 16-13 lead with 12:30 to play in the first half.

Yale 87, Alcorn State 73
Lorman, Miss. – Senior forward Reginal Johnson reached the 1,000-point milestone Wednesday to headline an 87-73 defeat to Yale from the Ivy League at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. Johnson entered the game needing just five points to reach the plateau. He netted 15 points and also registered four rebounds, a career-high four assists and a career-high three steals. Johnson played 36 minutes which was another career-high. Junior Dante Sterling also netted 15 points in the game, while senior A.J. Mosby recorded 14.
The Braves (0-6) trailed by as many in 16 in the first half when they came out hot after the intermission. Alcorn was down 44-34 when it went on a 7-0 spurt which included a three-pointer and lay-up by sophomore Maurice Howard, and a fast-break lay-up by freshman Troymain Crosby. It cut the deficit to 44-41 with 15:45 remaining. Yale (3-3) answered with a 16-3 to leap back in front 60-44 with 10:40 left. The Bulldogs led by as many as 21 in the second half. The Braves fought until the end and came as close as 80-69 at the 1:53 mark. Alcorn scored 49 points in the second half which was the most its scored in a half this season. The Bulldogs were guided by Miye Oni who scored a game-high 16 points. Paul Atkinson tallied 13 points, and Azar Swain and Blake Reynolds each had 11. Yale shot 26-54 (.481) from the field, while Alcorn was 24-60 (.400).

Texas State 71, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 54
Stockton, Calif. – The Texas State men's basketball team defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 71-54 Wednesday night in the Alex G. Spanos Center in both teams' second game of the Men Against Breast Cancer Showcase. Four Bobcats scored 10 or more points for the second straight game. With the win, Texas State improved to 2-2 on the season while the Golden Lions remain winless at 0-6. Tyler Blount led the Bobcats with 16 points while Immanuel King added 14 points.
Charles Jackson had 18 points to lead the Golden Lions.

Southern 69, UT-Martin 66
Baton Rouge, La. – Jared Sam scored a season-high 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field and was 9-of-11 from the free throw line as the Jaguars (1-5) picked up their first victory of the season.
Fatodd Lewis had a team-high 25 points and seven rebounds to lead the Skyhawks (1-4).
