SWAC Baseball Tournament Bracket Announced
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Eastern Division champion Alabama State and Western Division champion Texas Southern will be the top seeds in the 2018 SWAC baseball tournament, as the tournament bracket was announced Wednesday. The Hornets and Tigers met in last year’s championship game, with TSU defeating ALST 4-2 in extra innings. The Hornets earned an 18-6 record in SWAC play, while Texas Southern finished at 17-6 in its division.
The 2018 SWAC baseball tournament will take place on from May 16-20 at Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans, La. The tournament bracket can be viewed in the related links tab. This year’s championship game will be televised live on ESPNEWS, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m CT. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Grambling State earned the number two seed in the West, by finishing the regular season at 14-10. The Tigers will play Mississippi Valley State in the opening round, which will begin at noon on Wednesday. The Delta Devils earned the number three seed in the East with a 9-15 record in conference play.
Alabama A&M finished in a tie for third with MVSU in the Eastern Division, but are ineligible for the 2018 baseball tournament, due to APR postseason ban.
Jackson State will be the number two seed in the East, after finishing with a conference record of 17-7. The Tigers will play Arkansas Pine Bluff in the first round, with first pitch set for 9 a.m. The Golden Lions are the number three seed in the West, after finishing with a 12-10 record in SWAC play. The Golden Lions have two games conference games that were rained out earlier in the season, but are not required to be made up as they would not have an impact on the seeding for the tournament.
Alcorn State will be the number four seed in the East, finishing with a 7-17 record in SWAC play and will face number one seed in the west, Texas Southern. First pitch for that contest is slated for 3 p.m.
Prairie View A&M earned the number four seed in the West, with a 8-16 record in the regular season, and will face Alabama State in the opening round. That contest will begin at 6 p.m.
