Baseball Players of the Week: April 23
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Gustavo Rios of Alabama State and Carlos Lopez of Alcorn State have been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball hitter and pitcher of the week for their performances over the past week of the regular season.
Hitter of the Week
Gustavo Rios (Alabama State)
1B - 6-3 - Sr. - Kissimmee, Fla.
Rios hit .556 in five games this week, splitting time between first base and designated hitter. The senior finished 10-for-18 in five starts, collecting a pair of doubles and a home run. He scored five runs and drove in a team-high 11 runs. Rios finished the week slugging .833 and had an on-base percentage of .609, while recording a stolen base. The senior went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI in the series opener against Jackson State, and followed that up with a 2-for-3 performance with three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored in the second game of the series. He finished the weekend by going 2-for-4 with four runs batted in.
Pitcher of the Week
Carlos Lopez (Alcorn State)
RHP - 6-3 - Jr. - Barranquitas, PR
The junior from Barranaquitas, Puerto Rico started the first game in this weekend’s East Division matchup with MVSU. He went 7.0 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and no free bases. Lopez threw a total of 108 pitches and faced 27 batters, fanning nine of them. With the victory, he improved to 3-2 on the season.
