Baseball Players of the Week: February 26
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ray Hernandez and Darren Kelly, both of Alabama State have been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball hitter and pitcher of the week for their performances over the past week.
Hitter of the Week
Ray Hernandez (Alabama State)
INF - 6-3 - Sr. - Orlando, Fla.
Hernandez finished the week hitting .450 in five games, finishing with four homeruns for the week. The redshirt junior hit one against UAB, and hit three in the series against Southern – including a pair in game two. He finished the week with nine hits, eight runs scored and eight runs batted in. Hernandez also finished with a pair of doubles and a 1.150 slugging percentage for the week (.542 on-base), with three walks.
Pitcher of the Week
Darren Kelly (Alabama State)
P - 6-3 - Jr. - Ocala, Fla.
Kelly won his first game of the season in a 14-0 victory over Southern, in which he set a single-game school record with 16 strikeouts in just seven innings of work. The senior left the game with a no-hitter intact through seven, as the Jaguars were held to just one hit total in the contest.
