Baseball Players of the Week: May 8
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Joseph Estrada of Alabama State and Aaron Solis of Texas Southern have been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball hitter and pitcher of the week for their performances over the past week of the regular season.
Hitter of the Week
Joseph Estrada (Alabama State)
OF - 5-11 - Sr. - Celba Puerto Rico
Estrada hit .563 on the weekend to help Alabama State clinch the East Division and the top seed from that side heading into the SWAC Baseball Championship Tournament in 10 days. The senior finished the weekend going 9-for-16 with five doubles and five runs batted in, while scoring four runs of his own. He slugged .875 and had an on-base percentage of .588. Over the three games this weekend. Estrada picked up three hits in each of the three games, including a pair of doubles on Friday and another two in the nightcap on Sunday. He also knocked in three runs in the first game of the day on Sunday.
Pitcher of the Week
Aaron Solis (Texas Southern)
RHP - 6-0 - Jr. - League City, Texas
Aron Solis won his SWAC West Division-leading eighth game in his only mound appearance this week. A junior from League City, Texas, Solis scattered six hits over seven innings without walking a batter in TSU’s 8-1 win over Grambling on Friday to clinch the team’s third West Division title in program history. The lone blemish on Solis’ line was a solo home run to Drexler Macaay in the top of the seventh inning, which ended a run of 12 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings against Grambling. In his first year at TSU, Solis has an 8-3 record with a 3.36 ERA and 56 strikeouts. Against SWAC opponents, he is 7-1 with a 1.99 ERA.
