Volleyball Recaps: November 9
Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3, Grambling State 0 (25-20,25-20,25-23)
GRAMBLING, La. - Behind double-digit kill efforts from Lisa Casimie (13) and Taylor Burrall (10), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (12-19, 11-7 SWAC) clinched the No. 4 seed with a straight-set win over Grambling State (15-22, 8-9 SWAC) at Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center Thursday night.
Britney Sahlmann tallied a match-high 40 assists, while Kendalle Howard put up 14 digs and nine kills, and Jade Sanlin recorded 13 digs.
Chasity Nicks paced the Lady Tiger offense with 10 kills and seven digs. L’Muriell Thrower and Diemend Richardson added 14 and 10 assists, while Erineka Mollere led the way defensively with eight digs.
UAPB held the statistical edge virtually across the board, tallying 48 kills, 46 assists, 45 digs, six service aces and 5.0 total team blocks. By comparison, Grambling finished the match with 32 kills, 29 digs, 29 assists, 4.0 total team blocks and three service aces. The Lady Lions outhit GSU .250-.227.
With the loss, Grambling and Southern's Nov. 11 match will decide the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds. The Lady Tigers must defeat Southern in less than five sets or by more points than Southern won the teams' prior meeting on Nov. 5 -- should it require five sets -- to claim the No. 5 seed.

Jackson State 3, Mississippi Valley 2 (21-25,21-25,25-18,25-23,15-9)
JACKSON, Miss. - Jackson State (8-25, 7-11 SWAC) clinched the eighth and final slot in the SWAC Volleyball Tournament, eliminating the Devilettes (8-26, 5-13) in a five-setter at T.B. Ellis Gymnasium Thursday night.
Dayjah Stewart led the charge with 17 kills on a .484 attack percentage for Jackson State. Alexandra Burney (15 kills, 13 digs) and Camry Dabney (13 digs, 11 kills) both recorded double-doubles. Terri Irving posted 26 assists, six kills and six digs. Sapphire Simpson chipped in 19 assists, and Tyler Moorer anchored the defensive effort with 27 digs.
Kalin Barnes and Taylor Selfridge led MVSU with 17 kills each. Barnes recorded 11 digs, and Selfridged racked up 24 digs. Jessica Bell led the Devilettes with 25 digs, and Jaime Polk served up 29 assists to go with seven digs.
With the win, Jackson State will face top-seeded Alabama State in the quarterfinal round of the 2017 SWAC Volleyball Tournament.
