Grambling State 3, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 2 (16-25,25-15,24-26,25-21,15-6)

PINE BLUFF, Ark. - Kevreion Ward put away 16 kills and five blocks to lead Grambling State (13-18, 7-6 SWAC) to victory in a five-set thriller over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (9-18, 8-6 SWAC) Thursday night at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

Ward hit at .500 for the match. Chasity Nicks notched a double-double with 14 kills, 12 digs and three blocks for the Lady Tigers. Diemend Richardson and L'Murriel Thrower dished out 22 assists each, and Erineka Mollere collected 25 digs.

Kendalle Howard had a strong outing for Arkansas-Pine Bluff despite the loss, putting up 14 kills, 14 digs and three blocks. Taylor Sheppy added 13 kills. Lisa Casimie chipped in nine kills, eight digs and two blocks. Britney Sahlmann put up 43 assists to go with four digs and four kills, and leading the defensive effort were Cheyenne Ogders and Jade Sanlin, who notched 16 and 15 digs, respectively.

The Lady Lions started things off quickly to the tune of a 10-4 run to open the match. The Lady Lions led by as many as 10 in the frame, but after a Lauren Corby kill wrapped up set one in their favor, Grambling returned fire in the second set. After numerous attack errors on behalf of UAPB keyed a 10-2 Grambling run that overtook a 6-4 Lady Lions lead, the Lady Tigers pushed ahead as kills from Ward, Nicks and Tess Reynolds fueled a double-digit set win that tied the match.

Similar to set one, UAPB opened quickly in set three, this time to a 12-5 advantage. Grambling rebounded to keep things close, ultimately taking a 23-22 lead. However, consecutive spikes from Howard sparked a 4-1 run that allowed Arkansas-Pine Bluff to take the frame.

A nip-and-tuck fourth set appeared to be UAPB's for the taking at the midpoint -- at which time UAPB had a 12-11 advantage -- but the Lady Lions gifted Grambling four points via attack error, and Ward smacked down three kills late to power Grambling to a match-tying set win. Ward was the difference in the final set, as she made four kills during a frame largely dominated by the Lady Tigers, who opened on a 6-1 run and never looked back.
