MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama State swept their two matches on the opening day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Roundup Friday at Lockhart Gymnasium.
Alabama State (18-9, 11-0 SWAC) started the day with a 3-0 victory over Southern (6-14, 6-4) behind 14 kills from Krysta Medearis. She finished the match hitting .520 with just one error. Although she was the lone player in double figure kills, Briana Dorsey connected for nine kills with just one error to hit .571. With her performance in the opener, Dorsey went over 1,000 career points for the Lady Hornets.
Ni’yesha Brown finished with eight kills and hit .300, and she finished with a double-double as she added 12 digs in the win.
Kori Kutsch finished with 23 assists and Justus Tuiolosega added 12, while Asha Daniels posted a match-high 15 digs.
The Lady Hornets ran their consecutive conference winning streak to 32 matches with a 3-0 victory over Grambling State (10-17, 4-5) in the nightcap.
In the finale, Brown led Alabama State with 15 kills and nine digs; while Bayle’ Bennett added 10 kills and eight digs. Dorsey finished with another .500-plus night hitting with seven kills and added four blocks in the win.
Kutsch led Alabama State with a match-high 20 assists and Tuiolosega added 14.

Grambling State 3, Jackson State 1 (22-25,25-15,25-14,25-20)
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Grambling State pulled out a 3-1 victory over Jackson State during early action at the SWAC Volleyball Roundup hosted by Alabama State University at Lockhart Gymnasium.
Against Jackson State, Chasity Nicks paced the offense with 21 kills and seven digs. L’Muriell Thrower and Diemend Richardson recorded 26 and 20 assists, respectively. Talicia Lang led the way defensively with 14 digs, while Erineka Mollere added 13.
Alexandra Burney led the way offensively for Jackson State with 13 kills and 13 digs. Sapphire Simpson registered 37 assists and six digs. Defensively, Jackson State was led by Tyler Moorer with 16 digs, while Camry Dabney tallied 11.

Texas Southern 3, Alcorn State 0 (25-14,25-12,25-17)
Southern 3, Alcorn State 1 (25-10,23-25,25-13,25-16)
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alcorn State fell in its opening matches of the SWAC Volleyball Roundup at Alabama State University, dropping a straight-setter versus Texas Southern and losing a four-set affair to Southern in the nightcap.
The Lady Tigers -- who later defeated Alabama A&M in four sets -- have won six straight matches. TSU (11-8, 8-3) got 10 kills from Alexis Austin, who hit .588 on the match. Kirby Anderson put down seven kills and blocked eight attacks. Cassidy Jannson and Nicole Robinson posted six kills each. Asia Howard dealt 18 assists, and Erin Adams posted 15 digs.
Alcorn State (3-32, 0-11) got seven kills from Singryd Valadares. Octavia Dixon and Alondra Rivera Modesto posted five kills each. Brittney Dumas and Jasmine Chambers put up 13 and 11 assists, respectively, and Pai Iosia picked up 11 digs.
Against Southern, Dixon led the Lady Braves with 10 kills and five digs. Mae Lewis added nine kills. Jasmine Chambers dished out 27 assists, and Pai Iosia led the defensive effort with 18 digs.
Shelby Jolly led Southern with five kills. Ranaja Taylor and Arabella Hall put away four kills each. Vaterra Calais handed out 11 assists. Hall and Princess Stark notched six blocks each, and Bailey Jefferson led with 11 digs.
Alabama A&M 3, Prairie View A&M 0 (25-16,25-19,25-12)
Texas Southern 3, Alabama A&M 1 (17-25,25-15,25-19,25-18)
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama A&M (9-16, 9-2) split in day one of the SWAC Volleyball Roundup at Alabama State University in Lockhart Gymnasium.
The Lady Bulldogs started their day with a straight-set win over Prairie View A&M (3-14, 3-7), who later fell to Mississippi Valley State. Terra Brooks led AAMU with 12 kills to go with seven digs. Mikel Coleman added eight kills, and Syretha Pride posted seven kills and four blocks. Meredith Sieck put up 23 assists and a team-best 11 digs.
Prairie View, who was without senior Taylor Goudeau for the match, was led by an eight-kill effort from Victoria Pearson. Erica Jimenez and Mykaeli Franklin dished 11 assists each, and Franklin posted nine digs.
The Lady Bulldogs later fell to Texas Southern in their final match of the day. The victory allowed the Lady Tigers to avenge a four-set loss to Alabama A&M during the West Volleyball Roundup. Kirby Anderson led with 11 kills and seven digs for TSU, and Cassidy Jannson put away 10 kills. Asia Howard posted 22 assists and 10 digs, and Alyssa Chudian collected 12 assists and 10 digs.
Courtney Oliver led AAMU with 14 kills. Pride added 13, and Brooks put down 11. Sieck dished out 41 assists and added eight digs. Helena Figueiredo led with 17 digs.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3, Mississippi Valley State 0 (25-19,26-24,25-13)
Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3, Jackson State 0 (25-23,25-14,25-16)
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Arkansas-Pine Bluff (7-16, 6-4) swept Mississippi Valley State (5-21, 3-7) and Jackson State during day one of the SWAC Volleyball Roundup at Alabama State University.
UAPB downed the Devilettes to begin the day behind 14 kills and 10 digs from Taylor Sheppy. Kendalle Howard added 15 digs and 10 kills. Jade Sanlin led the defense with 22 digs, and Britney Sahlmann posted 40 assists, nine digs and four kills.
Kalin Barnes put in 13 kills and 15 digs for the Devilettes. Taylor Selfridge added 12 digs and six kills. Jaime Polk dished out 23 assists.
Versus Jackson State (4-22, 3-8), Howard and Lisa Casimie posted 11 kills each. Casimie and Lauren Corby each made five blocks. Sahlmann dished out 31 assists and chipped in seven digs.
Camry Dabney led JSU with nine kills. Terri Irving put up 18 assists and five kills. Alexandra Burney and Marina Brito posted four kills apiece, with Burney adding seven digs.
Mississippi Valley State 3, Prairie View A&M 1 (25-22,17-25,26-24,25-22)
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Mississippi Valley State took down Prairie View A&M in four sets to earn a win on day one of the SWCA Volleyball Roundup at Alaba,a State University on Friday.
Taylor Selfridge and Kalin Barnes each had double-doubles, with Selfridge going for a team-high 15 kills and 11 digs and Barnes putting in 12 kills and 14 digs. Tylia Dixon had 14 digs and five kills, and Jaime Polk was a dig shy of a double-double with 32 assists and nine digs.
Larissa Martinez put in a game-high 17 kills for the Lady Panthers. Victoria Pearson added nine kills. Erica Jimenez (22) and Mykaeli Franklin (19) combined for 41 assists, with Franklin adding 15 digs and Jimenez recording eight digs. Christen Augustine led with 17 digs.
