Alabama A&M 3, Grambling State 0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-12)

HOUSTON – Jaelin Gant smacked down 11 kills and Meredith Sieck dished out 30 assists as Alabama A&M (3-12, 3-0 SWAC) swept Grambling State (2-13, 0-1 SWAC) during day two of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup at Texas Southern University.

Syretha Pride posted eight kills and figured in on nine combined blocks as Alabama A&M outhit Grambling .337 -.139 in the match. Mikel Coleman added seven kills, and Helena Figueiredo led the way with 12 digs while Terra Brooks and Riley Balsmeyer each put in 11 digs.

Talicia Lang was a bright spot for Grambling, putting up 10 kills. Kevreion Ward and Chasity Nicks each collected seven kills, and Erineka Mollere posted 12 digs. L’Muriell Thrower (13) and Diemend Richardson (12) combined for 25 assists.

Alabama A&M’s front line turned away 10 Grambling tries in the match and was efficient offensively, making just eight errors in the attack phase.

Alabama State 3, Prairie View A&M 0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-18)

HOUSTON – Bayle’ Bennett and Ni’yesha Brown each delivered 11 kills to guide Alabama State (10-7, 3-0 SWAC) to a sweep over Prairie View A&M (1-6, 1-2 SWAC) during day two of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.

Kori Kutsch and Justus Tuiolosega combined for 29 assists, with Tuiolosega putting up 13 helpers and 12 digs. Larissa Martinez and Brtiny Mitchell posted nine kills apiece for the Lady Panthers. Mykaeli Franklin (18) and Erica Jimenez (13) teamed for 31 assists, and Christen Augustine posted 14 digs.

Alabama State put together a 5-0 run – aided  by four PVAMU attack errors – to blow open an 8-8 game one. After a hard-fought set two fell the Lady Hornets’ way thanks to offensive miscues by Prairie View, Alabama State won set three and the match after it managed to overcome a 13-12 deficit with a 13-6 run that saw six Hornet points scored as a direct result of Prairie View gaffes.

Southern 3, Mississippi Valley State 1 (25-10, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16)

Southern (2-11, 2-1 SWAC) got eight kills each from Ranaja Taylor, Arabella Hall and Brianna Hawkins as the Jaguars defeated Mississippi Valley (2-15, 0-3) in four sets during day two of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.

Hall also had six blocks, and Vaterra Calais dished out 22 assists for the Jaguars. Bailey Jefferson collected 32 digs.

Kalin Barnes (13 digs) and Taylor Selfridge (16 digs) also posted eight kills each for Mississippi Valley. Jaime Polk put up 25 helpers, and Jessica Bell chipped in 19 digs.

Southern flew out to a 1-0 lead after a dominant first set win. The Jaguars collected set two as well, before Mississippi Valley staved off a sweep to snipe set three from Southern thanks to a .070 attack clip by the Jaguars. The Jaguars regrouped and claimed set four while never being threatened in the frame. 

Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3, Alcorn State 0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-14)

A double-double from Lisa Casimie (11 kills, 11 digs) paced Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-13, 2-1 SWAC) to a sweep of Alcorn State (2-19, 0-3) during day two of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.

Lauren Corby added seven kills for the Lady Lions, who were without Kendalle Howard in the match. Britney Sahlmann dished out 31 assists, and Kaitlyn Hapke had six service aces, four kills and 10 digs.

Daharri Thompkins led Alcorn with eight kills. Joeli Warren-Smith added seven kills, and Pai Iosia contributed on both sides of the court with 13 digs and six kills. Jasmine Chambers dished out 19 assists.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff never trailed in the contest, outhitting Alcorn State .250-.121. The Lady Braves’ best chance came late in the second set, where three Iosia kills aided a 5-0 run that made the set 21-20 UAPB, but miscues by the Lady Braves ultimately derailed their bid for a match-tying set win, and UAPB coasted from there.

Texas Southern 3, Jackson State 0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-15)

HOUSTON - Alexis Austin put away 13 kills as Texas Southern (4-6, 2-1 SWAC) swept Jackson State (2-15, 1-2) during day two of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.

Nicole Robinson put down six kills for TSU in the win. Asia Howard dished out 13 assists and added eight digs. Cassidy Jannson's nine digs led Texas Southern in the category.

Jackson State -- who was outhit .219 -.048 by TSU -- got six kills and nine digs from Alexandra Burney. Terri Irving and Sapphire Simpson put up 13 assists each, and Markayshia Masani added 13 digs. Camry Dabney had five kills, but struggled in the attack game as she hit -.050 in the contest.

The visiting Tigers nearly committed as many errors as they did kills (27-22), allowing a more efficient Texas Southern front to hold control for much of the contest. After winning set one and snuffing out a quick JSU start, Texas Southern cruised to victory in set three.

Grambling State 3, Alcorn State 0 (29-27, 25-14, 25-16)

HOUSTON - Kevreion Ward's 13 kills powered Grambling State(6-13, 2-2 SWAC) to a straight-set win over Alcorn State (2-20, 0-4) during day two of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.

Jaivienna Jones added 11 kills, and Chasity Nicks put up nine kills, eight digs and three service aces. L'Muriell Thrower posted a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs, as did Diemend Richardson (12 digs, 11 assists).

Alcorn's Pai Iosia posted 10 digs, six kills and two service aces. Daharri Thompkins led the Lady Braves with eight kills, and Alondra Rivera Modesto added seven. Jasmine Chambers dished out 19 assists.

Alcorn controlled the early stages, building a 19-10 lead after kills from Thompkins and Iosia. Following a Grambling timeout, however, Ward and Jones asserted themselves offensively, combining for six kills as Grambling outscored Alcorn 19-8 to steal the set. From that point, the match belonged to Grambling.

Texas Southern 3, Mississippi Valley State 0 (25-22, 25-9, 25-11)

HOUSTON - Alexis Austin's nine kills paced a balanced Texas Southern (5-6, 3-1 SWAC) attack during a straight-set win over Mississippi Valley State (2-16, 0-4 SWAC) in day two of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.

Eight players had multiple kills for the Lady Tigers. Cassidy Jannson posted 11 digs and seven kills, and Asia Howard and Alyssa Chudian combined for 23 assists.

Taylor Selfridge's nine kills accounted for nearly half of the Devilettes' total in the match, and Kalin Barnes was limited to two kills. Texas Southern outhit MVSU .318 - .000 in the contest and outside of a back and forth first set that featured 15 ties and nine lead changes, the Lady Tigers were in the driver's seat for much of the way.

Alabama A&M 3, Southern 1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-14, 25-23)

HOUSTON - A 15-kill, eight-block effort from Syretha Pride helped power Alabama A&M (4-12, 4-0 SWAC) to a four-set win over Southern (2-12, 2-2) during day two of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.

Terra Brooks added 13 points and 13 digs in the win for AAMU. Meredith Sieck dealt 38 assists to go with 15 digs, and Helena Figueiredo posted 21 digs.

Shelby Jolly posted 16 kills to lead the Jaguars. Arabella Hall smacked 12 kils, and Paige Hall put down 11. Vaterra Calais dished out 32 assists, and Bailey Jefferson posted 21 digs.

After Southern overcame a 22-21 deficit to win set one, the Jaguars appeared poised to go ahead 2-0 after a kill from A. Hall made it 19-15 in favor of Southern. The Bulldogs turned it around as back-to-back kills from Mikel Coleman sparked a 5-0 run for Alabama A&M. Facing set point, AAMU closed it with a kill from Pride and two Southern miscues.

The ensuing momentum powered Alabama A&M the rest of the way, as the Lady Bulldogs won set three going away and overcame a 21-20 deficit in set four to win the match.

Alabama State 3, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-19)

HOUSTON - Led by Ni'yesha Brown's 16, four Lady Hornets notched double-digit kills as Alabama State (11-7, 4-0 SWAC) defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-14, 2-2) in four sets to conclude day two of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.

Bayle' Bennett and Briana Dorsey each put down 14 kills, and Payten Clark had 10. Bennett posted 14 digs, and Kori Kutsch also had a double-double with 39 assists and 12 digs.

Taylor Sheppy and Lisa Casimie put down 10 kills apiece to lead UAPB. Jade Sanlin posted 20 digs, and Britney Sahlmann dished out 29 helpers and 11 digs.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff took advantage of a sluggish first set by the Lady Hornets, outhitting Alabama State .370 -.118. The Lady Hornets rebounded and controlled the match for the rest of the way. After a dominant second set win, Alabama State closed the deal after feeding off a 12-7 start to set three and rebounding from a 10-6 deficit in the fourth set.

Prairie View A&M 3, Jackson State 2 (12-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12)

HOUSTON - Despite a sluggish start, Prairie View A&M (2-6, 2-2 SWAC) outlasted Jackson State (2-16, 1-3) in a five-set war to conclude day two of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.

Britney Mitchell and Hailee Morton put in 14 kills each to pace the Lady Panthers' attack. Mykaeli Franklin put up 32 assists, Erica Jimenez added 20, and Christen Augustine posted 33 digs.

Alexandra Burney led Jackson State with 17 digs and 11 kills. Marina Brito also had 11 kills and eight blocks. Terri Irving pushed up 25 assists. Camry Dabney posted eight kills on a .444 attack percentage, but was lost to injury late in the third set.

JSU dominated set one, opening with a 20-6 lead that held firm the rest of the frame. The roles reversed with Prairie View building a 19-9 lead in set two that allowed the Lady Panthers to cruise to a match-tying set win. Jackson State would steal the third set, but without Dabney -- who leads the Lady Tigers in kills -- in the final two sets, the Lady Tigers were unable to curtail the Lady Panthers down the stretch, as a 20-12 start to set four led to PVAMU tying things up.

In the fifth set, JSU led 10-8 before a 7-2 run by Prairie View -- helped along by numerous mistakes on the Lady Tigers' side of things -- won it for the Layd Panthers.
