Volleyball Recaps: September 22
Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3, Mississippi Valley State 0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-23)
HOUSTON – Kendalle Howard smacked down 12 kills and chipped in 12 digs to lead Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-12, 1-0 SWAC) to a three-set victory over Mississippi Valley State (2-13, 0-1 SWAC) during day one of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup at Texas Southern University.
Taylor Burrall and Taylor Sheppy each added nine kills – with Burrall hitting at .615 – for the Lady Lions. Lisa Casimie spiked eight kills, and Britney Sahlmann posted a double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs.
Jade Sanlin posted 13 digs, tops among UAPB players. The difference in the match was UAPB’s attacking efficiency, as the Lady Lions outhit Mississippi Valley .209 -.072.
For Mississippi Valley, Kalin Barnes put up a team-leading seven kills, adding seven digs. Taylor Selfridge added six kills for the Devilettes, and Jaime Polk dished out 21 assists. Jessica Bell led MVSU with 10 digs.
Texas Southern 3, Alcorn State 0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-18)
HOUSTON – Alexis Austin delivered 11 kills to propel Texas Southern (3-5, 1-0 SWAC) to a sweep of Alcorn State (2-17, 0-1 SWAC) during day one of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.
Texas Southern's Asia Howard picked up a double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs, and Kirby Anderson aided the TSU offense with nine kills, and Eboni Mitchell added seven. Valencia Grayson collected 11 digs, and Alyssa Chudian dished out 10 assists.
Alondra Rivera Modesto’s seven kills were tops among Lady Braves, and Jasmine Chambers put up 11 digs and 10 assists. Pai Iosia had six digs and four kills.
Outhit .223-.037, Alcorn battled TSU to an 18-18 tie in set one before a 7-1 run sealed it for TSU. After winning set two comfortably, Texas Southern was forced to play catch in set three as Alcorn capitalized on numerous attack errors to build a 12-7 lead. However, TSU outscored Alcorn 18-8 the rest of the way.
Alabama A&M 3, Prairie View A&M 0 (26-24, 25-15, 26-24)
HOUSTON – Alabama A&M blocked 14 attacks as the Lady Bulldogs took down Prairie View A&M in straight sets to get their first win of the season during day one of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.
AAMU (1-12, 1-0) got six kills and eight blocks from Courtney Oliver. Syretha Pride was in on six blocks and added four kills. Meredith Sieck dished out 20 assist, and Helena Figueiredo picked up 11 digs.
Prairie View A&M (0-5, 0-1) got eight kills from Taylor Goudeau and Calli Jordan-Hensch, and Christen Augustine had 19 digs. Erica Jimenez and Mykaeli Franklin combined for 37 assists.
The Lady Panthers’ self-inflicted wounds ultimately cost them against Alabama A&M. Despite dominating every offensive category – PVAMU had more kills (39-25), digs (55-40) and assists (38-22) than Alabama A&M – Prairie View committed 39 attack errors to just 18 by Alabama A&M, a discrepancy that eventually fueled the Lady Bulldogs’ victory.
Grambling State 3, Jackson State 2 (15-25, 25-21, 25-23, 17-25, 15-11)
HOUSTON – Chasity Nicks notched a double-double with 16 kills, 15 digs and five blocks as Grambling State (5-11, 1-0 SWAC) pulled out a thrilling five-set victory over Jackson State (1-14, 0-1) during day one of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.
Grambling’s victory snaps an 11-game losing streak to Jackson State.
Kevreion Ward posted 11 kills, and Talicia Lang had 15 digs and 10 kills. Diemend Richardson (23) and L’Muriell Thrower (22) combined for 45 assists, and Erineka Mollere posted 23 digs. Alexandra Burney led the Jackson State attack with 17 digs and 16 kills.
Camry Dabney added 13 kills, and Tielar Richards notched 10 kills. Terri Irving had 28 assists, 12 digs and four kills, and Sapphire Simpson chipped in 24 assists. Tyler Moorer posted 23 digs.
In an even, nip-and-tuck contest – sans a one-sided opening set in favor of Jackson State – Grambling State ultimately prevailed with Mollere on serve during the deciding fifth set, during which kills from Ward and Lang coupled with a service ace pushed Grambling ahead 12-9. Another Ward spike preceded costly attack errors from Dabney and Richards, sealing it for Grambling.
The sides combined for 105 kills and 101 assists, which JSU holding a slight edge in each (54-51, 54-47).
Prairie View A&M 3, Mississippi Valley State 1 (25-16, 25-23, 21-25, 25-14)
HOUSTON – A 14-kill effort by Taylor Goudeau powered Prairie View A&M past Mississippi Valley State in a four-set affair during day one of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.
The Lady Panthers (1-5, 1-1) also got 11 kills from Victoria Pearson, and a combined 43 assists from Erica Jimenez (23) and Mykaeli Franklin (20). Jimenez had a double-double with 14 digs, and Larissa Martinez and Christen Augustine posted 12 digs each.
Jaime Polk put up a double-double for the Devilettes (2-14, 0-2) with 32 assists and 11 digs. Taylor Selfridge led with nine kills, and Kalin Barnes and Haley Buard chipped in eight kills apiece.
Sans the third set – during which the Devilettes hit at .302 en route to claiming the frame – MVSU struggled to consistently put pressure on at the point of attack, hitting no better than .053 in the other three periods. For the second-straight game, Prairie View dominated the stats with 54 kills to MVSU’s 37, as well as a 52-34 and 81-69 edge in assists and digs, respectively.
Alabama State 3, Southern 2 (20-25, 25-16, 28-30, 25-18, 15-11)
HOUSTON – Bayle’ Bennett delivered 20 kills on a .432 attack percentage to help Alabama State (8-7, 1-0) outlast Southern (0-11, 0-1) in a five-set thriller during day one of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.
Bennett notched a double-double with 14 digs as well. Ni’yesha Brown and Briana Dorsey added 11 kills each. Justus Tuiolosega dished out 28 assists and Kori Kutsch added 24 helpers with 11 digs.
Southern’s Shelby Jolly posted a team-best 14 kills, and Ranaja Taylor and Arabella Hall put down 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Vaterra Calais posted 39 helpers to go along with 15 digs and three service aces.
After Southern took advantage of a sluggish first set by Alabama State where the Lady Hornets hit at -.097, Alabama State regrouped to claim set two comfortably. The Jaguars managed to snipe a hard-fought set three, but the Lady Hornets took sets four and five, shaking off a 3-1 disadvantage in the final frame thanks in part to a .357 attack clip in the deciding stanza.
Alabama State 3, Grambling State 0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-16)
HOUSTON – Behind 11 kills by Bayle’ Bennett, Alabama State (9-7, 2-0 SWAC) defeated a short-handed Grambling State (5-12, 1-1 SWAC) squad in straight sets to conclude day one action for both teams during the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.
Bennett hit at an impressive .529 percentage, and Briana Dorsey delivered nine kills – on a .615 attack percentage – to go with three service aces while figuring in on seven blocks. Kori Kutsch had 19 assists and nine digs for the Lady Hornets.
Kevreion Ward posted nine kills to lead the Lady Tigers, who were without Chasity Nicks for this contest. Erineka Mollere posted 13 digs, and L’Muriell Thrower dished out 12 assists.
Alabama State largely coasted during the opening set thanks to hitting .522 as a collective during the frame. Alabama State managed to hold off a late Grambling charge in set two and won set three relatively comfortably. Grambling State was outhit .342 - .048 over the course of the match.
Jackson State 3, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-19)
HOUSTON – Camry Dabney’s 15 kills pushed Jackson State (2-13, 1-1 SWAC) past Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-13, 1-1) in four sets to conclude day one action for both teams during the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.
Alexandra Burney aided the Lady Tigers’ cause with 11 kills and 10 digs. Marina Brito added nine kills, and Terri Irving put up 26 assists and 11 digs. Markayshia Masani posted 21 digs, and Tyler Moorer added 14.
Arkansasd-Pine Bluff's Kendalle Howard had a double-double with 16 digs and 11 kills. Jade Sanlin also had 16 digs, and Taylor Burrall posted nine kills and six blocks (three solo). Britney Sahlmann had 31 assists and 12 digs. After UAPB took set one, Jackson State regrouped and controlled the match from that point.
The Lady Tigers tied it with a double-digit win in set two, and then held off a game Lady Lions effort to go on and post its first conference win of the year. JSU outhit UAPB .235-.118, committing 18 attack errors to Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s 26.
Alabama A&M 3, Texas Southern 1 (25-22, 30-28, 28-30, 25-14)
HOUSTON - Big games from Syretha Pride, Terra Brooks and Meredith Sieck propelled Alabama A&M (2-12, 2-0 SWAC) to a four-set victory over Texas Southern (3-6,1-1 SWAC) during day one of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.
Pride and Brooks each smacked down 17 kills, with Brooks adding 23 digs and Pride accounting for six combined blocks. Sieck dished out 50 assists, the best mark by a SWAC player in a single match this season. Mikel Coleman added nine kills.
Alexis Austin had a big game for Texas Southern despite the loss with 19 kills and 12 digs. Nicole Robinson added 10 kills, and Asia Howard had a double-double with 31 assists and 10 digs.
After Alabama A&M snapped up set one, the match became tightly contested as the next two frames required extra time. AAMU stole set two after overcoming a 22-14 deficit with a 16-6 run, but Texas Southern staved off another AAMU comeback attempt in set three to win it 30-28. However, it was all Lady Bulldogs in the fourth frame, who led by as many as 12.
Southern 3, Alcorn State 0 (25-11, 26-24, 25-6)
HOUSTON - Briana Hawkins and Ranaja Taylor put down nine kills each as Southern swept Alcorn State on the final match of day one of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.
The Jaguars (1-11, 1-1) also got eight kills from Paige Hall.
Alcorn State's Joeli Warren-Smith led with five kills. Jasmine Chambers dished out 11 assists, and Pai Iosia had 10 digs.
After a one-sided first set didn't go its way, Alcorn State (2-18, 0-2) largely dominated set two early on, at one point building a 20-12 lead thanks to a 7-0 run. However, Taylor asserted herself and that coupled with three costly Alcorn errors allowed the Jaguars to tie the set. Alcorn regrouped and led 24-21 with a chance to tie the match, but Vaterra Calais delivered two service aces as part of a 5-0 run to close the set for Southern. The Jaguars won set three without much resistance.
