Volleyball Players of the Week: September 12
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama State’s Ni’yesha Brown and Asha Daniels, and Mississippi Valley State’s Jaime Polk and Taylor Selfridge have been recognized as Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Players of the Week for their standout play from Sept. 5-9.
Offensive Player of the Week – Ni’yesha Brown, Alabama State

Brown smacked down a team-best 65 kills during her four matches this weekend during the ISTAP Collegaite Cup II, good for a 3.82 kills per set average. The senior hit .272 in the four matches – with Alabama State going 2-2 over that span -- and also recorded 37 total digs in the matches over the week. Brown recorded double-digit kills in all four of the Lady Hornets’ matches, averaging 16.3 kills per match this week. She ended the week by matching her career-high with 19 kills against Western Carolina, before following that up a few hours later with 18 more in a five-set victory over Jacksonville. She also recorded her first double-double of the season with 18 kills and 14 digs against Jacksonville in the final match of the tournament.
Defensive Player of the Week – Asha Daniels, Alabama State

Daniels recorded 60 total digs in four matches this week, averaging 4.00 digs per set and 15 digs per match in the four matches. The sophomore set a career-high with 16 digs against Southeastern Louisiana in the first match of the ISTAP Collegiate Cup II Friday night, before following that up with a new career-high of 22 digs against Western Carolina on Saturday in the tournament. She ended the week with 16 against Jacksonville, giving her 38 digs in the final day of the tournament – averaging 19 per match on the final day.
Setter of the Week – Jaime Polk, Mississippi Valley State

Polk finished a five-match week with 108 assists (6.75 per set) for the Devilettes. She had four double-digit assist games and two matches with 30 or more assists, posting two of the top three single-game highs in the category among SWAC setters this year. The sophomore also notched 47 digs, five kills and two service aces. Polk accounted for three double-doubles (32 A/11 D vs. Crowley's Ridge, 31 A/14 D vs. Arkansas-Monticello, 18 A/10 D vs. UL-Monroe) during the Devilettes’ recent slate of action as well.
Newcomer of the Week – Taylor Selfridge, Mississippi Valley State
RS | 5-11 | Jr. | Los Angeles, Calif.
Selfridge made her season debut for the Devilettes this past week, notching 49 kills, 50 digs and two blocks. She added three service aces as well. The junior posted double-doubles in her first two matches, putting up 15 kills (on a .433 attack percentage) and 14 digs in MVSU's win over Crowley's Ridge. Selfridge followed that up with a personal-best 17 kills and 14 digs versus Arkansas-Monticello and currently ranks second in kills per set in the league (3.06).
