Volleyball Players of the Week: August 29
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama State’s Ni’yesha Brown and Kori Kutsch, Alcorn State’s Fiapaipai Iosia, and Jackson State’s Camry Dabney have been recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference as volleyball players of the week for their exceptional performances during the opening weekend of the season.
Offensive Player of the Week
Ni’yesha Brown, Alabama State
Sr. | 6-0 | OH | Fresno, Calif.
Brown set career highs in back-to-back matches this weekend as part of the ISTAP Collegiate Cup as she finished with a career-high 18 kills against Savannah State, before bettering the mark with 19 against North Carolina A&T the very next night. She ended the weekend. She finished the night hitting .528 against Savannah State on 28 total attacks, while she followed that up with a .235 attack percentage against North Carolina A&T on Saturday. In all, she posted 37 kills, four service aces and hit at a .354 attack percentage.
Defensive Player of the Week
Fiapaipai Iosia, Alcorn State
Fr. | 5-7 | DS/L | Long Beach, Calif.
Fiapaipai “Pai” Iosia started in 3-of-4 games and played all 13 sets for the Lady Braves last week. She recorded 16 kills (1.23/set) on 77 total attacks with four assists. On defense, she led the team with 45 digs. At the UNO Invitational last weekend, the freshman finished with 11 kills, four assists, and 33 digs to earn All-Tournament Team honors.
Setter of the Week
Kori Kutsch, Alabama State
Jr. | 5-9 | S | Torrance, Calif.
Kutsch finished the week with 47 assists and 10 digs in aiding the Lady Horntes to a 2-0 start to the season during the ISTAP Collegiate Cup. She finished with a season-high 30 helpers against North Carolina A&T in a five-set victory to go along with eight digs. In the season-opener, Kutsch put up 17 assists during Alabama State’s sweep of Savannah State.
Newcomer of the Week
Camry Dabney, Jackson State
Fr. | 6-0 | OH | Cypress, Texas
Dabney started her Jackson State career off with impressive numbers as she posted 30 kills and 29 digs in the Lady Tigers’ first three matches of the 2017 campaign. Jackson State went 1-2 at the Southern Miss Invitational this past weekend, during which Dabney was named to the All-Tournament Team. In Jackson State's four-set victory over Nicholls State, the freshman set single-game career highs in kills (17) and digs (21).
