Alabama State wins SWAC Eastern Division title

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Alabama State women’s volleyball team earned the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference, Eastern Division, season championship Thursday night at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium. The Hornets defeated state rival, Alabama A&M, 3-2.

With this win, Alabama State has a league record of 6-0 with two divisional matches left for the season. This marks the Hornets’ second consecutive eastern division title. This team meetup (AAMU/ASU) was the exact match that decided the fate of the Hornets in 2013. That match a year ago also ended, 3-2, in favor of State.

Intensity poured from all players as the first set saw the two team's battle before the Bulldogs edged out the Hornets, 27-25, to take the early lead. Alabama A&M took an early 6-4 run in the toward the start of the second set. ASU would then claw its way back into the contest, capturing its first lead at 10-9. The Hornets outscored AAMU 5-3 down the final stretch to acquire set two's victory, 26-24.The third set of the game showcased AAMU jumping out to a 3-0 lead. The Hornets fought back and took the lead 10-7. After a couple of ties the Bulldogs scored consecutive points to go up 16-13.  With no avail, AAMU outscored ASU 7-3 to take the set, 25-21. Set four of the game featured 14 tie scores with the last being at 24. From there ASU grabbed the final two points and won the set. ASU held an early 7-4 lead in the final set. The closed out the set with a 15-8 victory, capturing the Eastern Division crown.  

The Hornets earned their highest hitting percentage during the first set at .419. Chelsey Scott led the team with 18 kills, while Brooke Beasley led with 33 assists. Scout Wonsang sprung for a high16 digs. Amber Bennett registered the highest individual attack percentage of the match at .625.

The Hornets will finish out their regular season play against UAB on Nov.11th, Alcorn State on Nov.14th and Mississippi Valley State University on Nov.15th. All three matches will begin at 7p.m.
