Regular season championships clinched for Alabama State

The Hornets (5-0 SWAC) wrapped up another regular season championship with a 5-0 win against Jackson State, who it met in last year’s SWAC Championship.

Alabama State picked up victories from No. 1 Ion Efrim (6-3, 6-4 against Andrey Alawi), No. 2 Carl-Louis Luckmann (6-2, 6-2 against Joan Sanson), No. 3 Tomas Fernandez (6-2, 6-2 against Fritz Jacobs), and No. 4 Alexis Collard (4-6, 6-2, 6-4 against Stylianos Gkontsaris) in singles competition.

The Hornets earn the doubles point with wins coming from the combination of Efrim/Collard (defeated Alawi/Gkontsaris 6-3) and Fernandez/Louis-Luckmann (6-1 against Vishu Prasad/Sanson).

Alabama State (7-0 SWAC) secured another regular season championship as well with a 4-1 victory over Jackson State, who it defeated in last year’s SWAC Championship.

Gabriela Lackova, Lea Krajcovicova, Mirna Curcic and Marija Blazevic all won in straight sets from the No. 3 through No. 6 singles positions. Lackova topped Nina Zhang 6-3, 6-1, Krajcovicova beat Oni Jones 6-1, 6-1, Curcic got past Ariel Dickson 6-0, 6-3 and Blazevic defeated Daria Butorina 6-0, 6-3.

The Tigers won the doubles points with wins from Lucia Solis/Tyler Smith over Reka Szentes/Chloe Kabama 6-4 while Zhang/Dickson teamed to top Blazevic/Curcic 6-3.  Krajcovicova and Lackova beat Jones and Butorina 6-3 for the lone win in doubles competition by Alabama State.

Each will be chasing a perfect regular season record before heading into New Orleans, La. to be the No. 1 seeds at the SWAC Tennis Championships at the Pepsi Tennis Center from April 13-15.
