BATON ROUGE, LA – Day two of the first SWAC Tennis Round Up of the 2018 season played across four sites in the greater Baton Rouge area received better cooperation from the weather as a fuller slate of matches were played throughout the day at Southern University’s Tennis Courts, Independence Park Tennis Center, Forest Park Tennis Center and Highland Park Tennis Courts. 


The majority of matches that were originally scheduled to take place on Saturday will be postponed to a later date. 



Among the highlights on the women’s side of the standings, Alabama State picked up a pair of victories by defeating both host Southern 4-2 in the morning session and then topped Prairie View A&M 4-2 in the afternoon to join Alabama A&M atop of the standings with a 2-0 conference record.


Alabama State’s Reka Szentes, Mirna Curcic, Lea Krajcovicova, and Marija Blezevic all earned wins in singles play versus Southern and followed with victories from Blazevic, Curcic, Chloe Kabamba and Gabriela Lackova against Prairie View A&M in the afternoon match. 


Prairie View A&M earned a thrilling 4-3 nail biter against Alcorn State earlier in the day.  Timara Maxwell was the lone Lady Panther to win both her singles match at the No. 6 position by a count of 6-2, 6-1 and also teamed with Stacy Lackey to help lock up the doubles point at the No. 3 spot with a 6-3 triumph. 


Joining them atop of the standings was Alabama A&M, who built upon their day one victory with a 4-0 decision over Mississippi Valley State.  Virag Hollos, Beatriz Gutierrez, Shrarre Smith and Nthabiseng Mashego all won in straight sets or by default for the Lady Bulldogs. 


In afternoon action, Alcorn State grinded out a tight victory over Grambling State 4-1 by pulling out three wins in a tie-breaker. 


Bianca Birkenstock, Anastasia Vaganova and Marlene Maier all went to a third tie-break set before emerging with victorious.  Yulia Popova also won at the No. 3 singles position to improve to 5-1 overall. 



Alabama A&M moved to 2-0 in conference play by topping Mississippi Valley State 4-0.  Carlos Salas, Cristian Bigott, Shakir Elvin and Mateo Monroy all won in straight sets to help the Bulldogs get past the Delta Devils. 


In a competitive battle, Prairie View A&M slipped past Alcorn State 4-2 with victories from, Xavier Lawrence, Taqel Lewis, Zach Suico and Kevin Ugarteche.  Kert Kilumets and Johnatan Parat earned wins for the Braves. 


Alabama State handed Prairie View A&M their first conference loss with a 4-1 win headed by Chris Andre, Alejo Calvis, Alexis Collard and Tomas Fernandez, who won from their singles position.
