SWAC Men's Tennis Recaps: Quarterfinals

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Teams from the state of Mississippi doubled up on their victories during Friday’s quarterfinal rounds of the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men’s Tennis Tournament at City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans, La. with the Alcorn State and Jackson State men’s teams each advancing to the semifinals after both women’s teams also advanced earlier in the day.


No. 5 Jackson State came out victorious first with a 4-0 sweep against No. 3 Arkansas-Pine Bluff as Stylianos Gkontsaris and Federico Mendieta each won their singles and doubles matches.  The bottom of the lineup was particularly strong for the Tigers as the No. 4, 5 and 6 players all won their respective singles matches. 


Playing from the No. 5 singles position, Gkontsaris paid dividends by earning a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Jualon Greig.  Gkontsaris, a senior from Thessaloniki, Greece, then teamed with sophomore Andrey Alawi to defeat the team of Le’Darrien Ledbetter and Aravind Vangala 6-1 at the No. 2 doubles spot.


Mendieta beat Khusto Ledwaba 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 singles position and then teamed with Fritz Jacobs to get past Simon Lewis and Junius Ross 6-2 at the No. 3 doubles spot to secure the doubles point. 


Vishu Prasad also picked up a victory at the No. 6 singles position by defeating Ledbetter 6-0, 7-5. 


The Tigers (6-18) will next play against No. 2 Prairie View A&M on Saturday, but not before 7:30 p.m. at the Hilton Riverside indoor tennis courts due to impending inclement weather the area. 


In the other quarterfinal, No. 4 Alcorn State eliminated No. 6 Alabama A&M with a 4-1 victory behind the strength of three players who earned wins in both singles and doubles competition.


SWAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Year Kert Kilumets took care of Nishangan Nadaraja 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot while Stojan Stojanovski topped Carlos Salas 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 position.


Kilumets, a senior from Kuressaare, Estonia, paired with Stojanovski, a freshman, to get past Nadaraja and Shakir Elvin 6-1 from the No. 1 doubles slot. 

From the No. 3 singles position, Jonatan Parat emerged victorious with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Cristian Bigott.  Matas played with Nuno Rocha to top Fermin Ruiz and Salas 6-4 at the No. 3 doubles position. 

Ruiz stood out for the Bulldogs (3-14) with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 5 singles spot against Suyash Gupta.  Bigott, a sophomore from Bogota, Columbia, also teamed with Mateo Monroy to defeat Parat and Guputa 6-4. 

Alcorn State (6-13) advances to play top-seeded Alabama State (9-9) not before 5 p.m. at the Hilton Riverside indoor tennis courts due to impending inclement weather the area.
