MONTGOMERY, ALA. – The fourth and final day of the second SWAC Round Up concluded with just one match unfinished due to inclement weather. Alabama State and Alabama A&M was the only match up that did not finish play due to rain. It will be made up this Friday at 2 p.m. at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
Regular season championships clinched for Alabama State
Men
The Hornets (5-0 SWAC) wrapped up another regular season championship with a 5-0 win against Jackson State, who it met in last year’s SWAC Championship.
Alabama State picked up victories from No. 1 Ion Efrim (6-3, 6-4 against Andrey Alawi), No. 2 Carl-Louis Luckmann (6-2, 6-2 against Joan Sanson), No. 3 Tomas Fernandez (6-2, 6-2 against Fritz Jacobs), and No. 4 Alexis Collard (4-6, 6-2, 6-4 against Stylianos Gkontsaris) in singles competition.
The Hornets earn the doubles point with wins coming from the combination of Efrim/Collard (defeated Alawi/Gkontsaris 6-3) and Fernandez/Louis-Luckmann (6-1 against Vishu Prasad/Sanson).
Women
Alabama State (7-0 SWAC) secured another regular season championship as well with a 4-1 victory over Jackson State, who it defeated in last year’s SWAC Championship.
Gabriela Lackova, Lea Krajcovicova, Mirna Curcic and Marija Blazevic all won in straight sets from the No. 3 through No. 6 singles positions. Lackova topped Nina Zhang 6-3, 6-1, Krajcovicova beat Oni Jones 6-1, 6-1, Curcic got past Ariel Dickson 6-0, 6-3 and Blazevic defeated Daria Butorina 6-0, 6-3.
The Tigers won the doubles points with wins from Lucia Solis/Tyler Smith over Reka Szentes/Chloe Kabama 6-4 while Zhang/Dickson teamed to top Blazevic/Curcic 6-3. Krajcovicova and Lackova beat Jones and Butorina 6-3 for the lone win in doubles competition by Alabama State.
Each will be chasing a perfect regular season record before heading into New Orleans, La. to be the No. 1 seeds at the SWAC Tennis Championships at the Pepsi Tennis Center from April 13-15.
Other teams to clinch a spot in the SWAC Tournament for the women's side of the bracket include: Southern, Prairie View A&M, Jackson State and Alcorn State. On the men's side of the bracket, Prairie View A&M, Alcorn State, Jackson State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Alabama A&M have punched their tickets to the tournament.
