HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Marina Clark and Hatty Shope led Alabama State to a doubleheader split with Alabama A&M Saturday, winning the second game 15-3 after dropping the opener 5-2 at Lady Bulldog Field in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play.
Clark and Shope combined to drive in eight runs in the second game of the doubleheader, with Clark picking up five as she finished the game 3-for-4. Shope finished game one 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Kaylee Davis finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored and Casey Durham finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Charlene Castro finished 2-for-2 with a run scored and a pair of walks.
Alabama State stormed back after dropping game one to jump ahead in the second game with six runs in the first two innings. The Lady Hornets scored two runs in the top half of the first inning highlighted by a single by Clark to take a 2-1 lead. They extended the lead to 6-3 with four runs in the top half of the second inning, highlighted by two more RBI from Clark.
She added another pair of runs batted in with a two-run home run in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 8-3, before Hatty Shope picked up her second and third RBI of the game with a two-run double to center to push the lead to 10-3. The Lady Hornets added five more runs in the fifth inning, using singles from Amira James and Davis to drive in runs, as well as an RBI groundout by Makala Burt and a two-run double by Durham for the final margin.
Skyler Sullivan (6-10) picked up the win, working five innings (complete game) and allowing three runs off of just three hits.
In the opener, Alabama State jumped ahead quickly with a run in the each the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Lady Hornets were able to get on top in the first on a fielder’s choice by Shope to score Durham, before James scored on an RBI groundout by Aimee Felices for the 2-0 lead.
Alabama A&M was able to the game up in the third as they scored a run in each the second and third innings. The Lady Bulldogs took the lead with a single run in the fourth, before two more runs in the fifth for the final margin.
Alabama State was held to five hits in the opener, with five different players picking up a hit each in the loss. Durham finished the game with a double and a run scored. Meanwhile, Justine Jean suffered the loss on the mound, working six innings and allowing five runs – only two earned – off of 10 hits with four strikeouts.
