Texas Southern wins Western Divsion

Texas Southern 9, Alcorn State 0 (F/5) 

LORMAN, Miss. - Texas Southern pounded out 13 hits as the Lady Tigers cruised past Alcorn State 9-0 in five innings to clinch its ninth-straight Western Division championship. The Lady Tigers (22-16-1, 13-5 SWAC) also get the top seed among all western division tournament-bound teams.

Texas Southern traded a scorelss first inning with Alcorn State (14-33, 11-7 SWAC) before Madi Marek doubled to score Dominique Tello in the second inning to put TSU on the board. The Lady Tigers pulled away with consecutive four-run frames during the second and third innings.

Led by Tevanae Tate (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 R), five different Lady Tigers had at least two hits. Marek was 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Tello was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and two RBIs.

Alcorn was held to three hits -- one each from Malea Dickerson, Taylor Hughes and Desirea Lindsey -- by TSU starter Felicia Garza, who picked up the complete-game win with a three-hit shutout.

Despite the loss, Alcorn remains atop the Eastern Division standings. The Lady Braves could potentially clinch the division title tomorrow, pending results of a double-header betwee Alabama A&M and Alabama State.

PINE BLUFF, Ark. - Arkansas-Pine Bluff clinched the No. 2 seed in the Western Division in defeating Grambling State 9-1 during a Southwestern Athletic Conference make-up contest. In the nightcap, Mississippi Valley downed the Lady Tigers 5-0 as part of another rescheduled contest

Grambling State (11-28 overall, 1-16 SWAC) trailed 4-0 after one inning, but cut the deficit to 4-1 as Tayler Lenz-Selvera scored on a passed ball.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (16-26, 12-6) plated three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to pick up a 9-1 win.

Morgan Adams led the way at the plate by going 2-for-3 for GSU. Mercedes Williams, Kendalyn Arceneaux and Allye Hartley each recorded one hit. Caitlin McDowell (7-14) took the loss in 5.2 innings pitched. She surrendered nine runs (eight earned) on 13 hits, with one strikeout.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (16-27, 12-6 SWAC) finished the game with nine runs on 13 hits and stranded four baserunners. Tonnay Hawkins paced the Lady Golden Lions attached by going 3-for-3, with three runs scored. Tamira Chatman and Ta’Lyn Moody each registered two hits.

Juliana Dominguez (7-6) gave up one unearned run on five hits, with one strikeout in six innings to earn the win.

Mississippi Valley scored one run in the second inning and three more in the third. In the sixth, MVSU scored the final run of the contest.

Alyssa Montes threw a complete-game shutout for the win in the pitcher's circle. She allowed six hits.

Miranda Sandoval led the Devilettes effort with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with two RBIs. Jodeci Afoa-Tuia and Taylor Baez each had a RBI as well.

For Grambling, Hartley, Williams and Monique Smith each had a pair of hits.
