Alcorn State 4, Alabama State 2
LORMAN, Miss. - A three-run triple by Robin Harrsion in the fourth inning lifted Alcorn State to a 4-2 victory over Alabama State Tuesday afternoon during Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action at the Alcorn Softball Complex.
With the win, the Lady Braves (13-31, 10-5 SWAC) not only clinch their third-straight winning season in conference play -- a feat that had not been accomplished in the program's history -- but also took over the driver's seat in the SWAC Eastern Division standings, as Alcorn now holds head-to-head tiebreakers over Alabama A&M and the Lady Hornets (19-27, 9-6 SWAC).
Alabama State jumped ahead in the second after Amira James laid down a bunt single to score Kristin Gunter, who reached via a leadoff single in the second and moved to third after a groundout and a flyout by Charlene Castro and Hailey Walker, respectively. Alabama State added to the lead when Castro drew a bases-loaded walk in the third.
Lady Hornet starter Justine Jean carried a perfect game into the fourth, where Amari Ramsey drew a walk to put an end to that bid and -- after another walk drawn by Taylor Hughes -- Victoria Tyler broke up the no-hitter attempt with a single. Harrison then cleared the bases and later scored after Alicia Hill reached via error.
Alabama State stranded a runner in both the fifth and sixth innings. Harrison, who started the game in the circle for the Lady Braves, got the win after a four-inning outing where she scattered four hits and two runs. Winter Ridgeway threw three innings of no-hit ball to get the save.
Jean was charged with the loss, allowing three hits and striking out five in 6.0 innings. Kaylee Davis led the Lady Hornets with two hits. Tyler was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Stephen F. Austin 9, Texas Southern 0 (F/6)
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Texas Southern dropped a 9-0 decision to Stephen F. Austin during non-conference action at the SFA Softball Complex Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Tigers (20-15-1) were held to five hits on the day. The Ladyjacks got on the board first when Amber Landry hit a two-run single in the bottom of the first to spark a three-run frame. Bryana Novegil hit a RBI double in the fourth to make it 4-0.
Texas Southern manufactured two prime chances late, as TSU loaded the bases in the fifth inning only to come away empty-handed. After forcing the Ladyjacks to strand two runners in the bottom of the fifth, Texas Southern again threatened in the sixth.
There, Sierra Valdez drew a walk, and Danielle Sonnier and Dominique Tello followed with back-to-back singles to load the bags again. However, the next two Lady Tiger hitters were retired to end the threat, and Stephen F. Austin put the contest away with a five-run splurge in the sixth.
Chelsea Baxter, who started the game for TSU, received the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in 2.0 innings. Tello was 2-for-3, and Jocilynn Ellis and Ebony Wiltz each had one hit. Landry was 3-for-3 to lead SFA.
