Softball Players of the Week: April 16

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -  Alabama State pitcher Justine Jean and Alabama A&M shortstop Tiana Sanders have been recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference as softball players of the week for their exceptional efforts during games played from April 9-14.

Softball Hitter of the Week - Tiana Sanders, Alabama A&M
SS | Sr. | 5-6 | Shelbyville, Tenn.

Sanders led the Eastern Division-leading Lady Bulldogs to a perfect 4-0 record during the last week of play, as Alabama A&M took two games each from Tuskegee and Mississippi Valley State. The senior slugger hit .625 (10-of-16) at the plate, driving in 12 runs while scoring six more. Additionally, Sanders hit three home runs and stole three bases. The Shelbyville, Tenn. product had three games with at least three hits over this span. Currently, Sanders leads the SWAC in batting average (.408), runs batted in (33), total bases (74) and is tied for the league lead in home runs (9).

Softball Pitcher of the Week - Justine Jean, Alabama State

Jean posted two dominant outings for the Lady Hornets during the team's 3-1 stretch over the past week. The sophomore hurler made three appearances -- two starts -- going 2-0 in the circle while allowing 11 hits and one unearned run. Versus South Carolina State on April 11, Jean fanned a career-high 13 batters as the Lady Hornets won 7-0. After pitching one inning of scoreless ball in relief during Alabama State's second win over S.C. State, Jean fired another complete game win, striking out seven hitters during a 4-1 victory over Alcorn State on April 13. Statistically the premier workhorse in the SWAC so far, Jean is tops in the league in innings worked (107.2), appearances (26), starts (18) and strikeouts (66).
