Jackson State 6, Alcorn State 5

JACKSON, Miss. - Alcorn State and Jackson State split during Southwestern Athletic Conference double-header action on Thursday, as the Lady Braves downed the Lady Tigers 18-5 in game one and JSU prevailed 6-5 in game two.

Alcorn State (6-23, 3-2 SWAC) overran Jackson State early in the first contest, as the Lady Braves ultimately tagged Jackson State starter Ashley Sain for eight runs in all -- five in the first -- prior to recording an out in the second inning. Malea Dickerson drew a bases-loaded walk to open the scoring for Alcorn, and Alicia Hill (2-3, 3 RBI, 2 R) followed with a two-run single. Hill later scored on an error by Jackson State's Tisha Lane behind the plate, and Dickerson scored on a wild pitch.

The barrage continued for the Lady Braves in the second inning, which saw Amari Ramsey hit two doubles and steal home twice in the frame. Ashley Arnold (2-4, R, 3 RBI) hit a two-run double during the frame, which ended with Alcorn State holding a commanding 13-0 lead.

Lane got JSU on the board with a RBI single, but Alcorn tacked on five more runs in the top of the third -- sparked by a two-run triple from Mariah Ortiz -- and cruised from there. Jackson State (8-21, 2-9 SWAC) managed four runs down the stretch but was unable to significantly threaten Alcorn's advantage.

Robin Harrison picked up her first win of the season, scattering six hits and five runs -- just one earned -- over a complete-game effort.

In game two, Alcorn appeared on its way to another win as Victoria Tyler smacked a two-run shot over the left field wall as the Lady Braves jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Jackson State tied it in the bottom of the third during a rally that Nava Fisher started with a lead-off double. Cheyenne Aplon later followed with a two-run double, and the Lady Tigers scrapped together two more runs thanks to Alcorn miscues.

The sides traded runs in the fifth, but in the seventh, Lane managed to get on base with a single. After Kaitlynn Elzie moved Lane into scoring position with a bunt -- during which Elzie was thrown out -- Kayla Owens won it with a walk-off RBI single.

Owens also got the win in the circle, allowing nine hits and five runs -- three earned -- in a complete game effort.

Ramsey was 3-for-4, pushing her hitting streak to 17 games. Lane, Alexis Hansard and Alyssa Fisher had two hits each for Jackson State.
