BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama State pitcher Vanessa Bradford and designated player Charlene Castro have been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s softball players of the week following their standout performances in the opening weekend of the 2018 season.

Pitcher of the Week – Vanessa Bradford, Alabama State
P | 5-9 | So. | Atlanta, Ga.

Bradford made two appearances (one start), going 1-1 during that span in the Troy Trojans’ season-opening invitational. The sophomore threw 4.2 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out two hitters during a 7-0 loss to the host Trojans.

The Atlanta, Ga. Native rebounded the next day, coming on in relief to throw 2.2 innings of no-hit ball, earning the win during a 5-4 decision over Tennessee State. Bradford currently boasts a 1.91 ERA thus far in the young season.

Hitter of the Week – Charlene Castro, Alabama State
DP | 5-7 | Jr. | Natalia, Texas

Castro had two multi-hit games in her first three outings of the 2018 season, going 5-for-8 (.625 BA) at the plate with two doubles and one RBI as the Lady Hornets scrapped together a 1-2 record during the Troy Trojans Invitational.

The junior slugger was a perfect 2-for-2 for a double in Alabama State’s season-opening setback versus Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, and Castro belted another double against the Trojans. In the Lady Hornets 5-4 win, Castro was 2-for-3 at the plate. She amassed a .875 slugging percentage and a .625 on-base percentage. Currently, Castro’s batting average stands second in the league.
