Nebraska-Omaha 2, Mississippi Valley State 1
Mississippi State 8, Mississippi Valley State 0
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi Valley State dropped both ends of a Sunday twinbill during the final day of the Mississippi State Bulldog Kickoff Classic, falling 2-1 to Nebraska-Omaha and taking an 8-0 defeat at the hands of host Mississippi State.
Mississippi Valley (0-4) threatened early as Lexany Terrones managed to reach base and later move to third on a throwing error and a passed ball, but the Devilette side was retired to end the top of the first. After Alejandra Salazar allowed a lead-off triple and two walks, the Devilettes managed to turn a double play to keep the game 0-0. Ikeyia Alexander turned on an offering and sent it over the wall to give the Devilettes a 1-0 lead, which stood until the fourth inning.
After MVSU squandered a chance and stranded two runners in the top of the frame, the Mavericks tied things up when -- after Natalie Mostek doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch -- Emma Dargy attempted a steal that was snuffed out, but during the ensuing putout attempt Mostek reached home plate. Sydney Hampton later delivered a RBI single to give Omaha the lead. MVSU stranded two runners and was unable to threaten the rest of the way.
Jodeci Afoa-Tuia had two hits for Valley. Salazar received the complete game loss, scattering five hits and two earned runs but walking 10 hitters.
Against the Lady Bulldogs, MVSU was held to one hit, compliments of Kailyn Dunn. From there, the middle innings did in the Devilettes. With MVSU down 3-0 entering the fifth, Mississippi Valley starter Chandler Ellis surrendered a solo shot to MSU's Kat Moore and a three-run homer to Morgan Bell. The Lady Bulldogs managed another run to force the mercy rule win.
Ellis allowed 11 hits and eight runs (seven earned) in 5.2 innings pitched. She struck out five.
