Texas Southern falls to #9 Texas A&M
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas Southern was defeated 14-0 in an abbreviated affair versus #9 Texas A&M during the opening round of the NCAA Women's Softball Tournament.
Terren Vinson led off with a single for Texas Southern (25-20), but Texas A&M starting pitcher Lexi Smith regrouped, striking out Heaven Benavidez. Vinson stole second to move to scoring position, but Smith fanned Madilynn Marek and Chanler Powell to end Texas Southern's initial threat.
The Lady Aggies benefitted from a costly error by Marek that would have ended the inning. Instead, Kristen Cuyos reach first, moving Tori Vidales -- who had walked -- to second. After another walk issued by TSU starter Jasmin Fulmore loaded the bases, Riley Sartain cleared the bases with a double, putting TAMU (43-10) up 3-0.
The Aggies put it away with an eight-run third inning that was highlighted by a two-run double by Samantha Show and a two-run triple by Erica Russell, during which Fulmore was chased from the circle. Cuyos later hit a three-run homer in the fourth.
Fulmore dropped to 11-5 after allowing 11 runs -- six earned -- and walking six batters in 2.1 innings. Smith allowed two hits and walked two, striking out nine in the complete game.
