CONFERENCE NEWS & NOTES
The teams in each divison with the best conference records will advance to the Toyota SWAC Football Championship on December 2 in Houston. The head-to-head meeting is the tie-breaker.
• Tie-breaker scenarios
West Division race
Grambling State holds a one-game lead over Southern with the other three teams the division (Prairie View A&M, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Texas Southern) mathematically eliminated from contention.
Each have two remaining conference games left.
Grambling State plays at Alabama State this Sat. at 2 p.m. on the SWAC Digital Network and then plays Southern in the Bayou Classic on Nov. 25.
Southern plays at Texas Southern this Saturday at 5 p.m. and then meeting Grambling on Nov. 25.
Grambling State can only clinch the SWAC West Division this Saturday with a WIN at ALST AND a Southern loss at Texas Southern.
Otherwise, it will come down to the Bayou Classic between Grambling State and Southern to determine the SWAC West Division crown on Sat. Nov. 25 at 4 p.m. on NBC Sports Network in New Orleans. That would decide a potential tie-breaker scenario.
• East Division race
It is down to two possible teams--Alcorn State and Alabama State. The other three teams in the division (Alabama A&M, Mississippi Valley State and Jackson State) have been mathematically eliminated.
Alcorn State is 4-1 in conference play with two remaining conference games (Sat. vs. MVSU at 2 p.m. and next Sat. Nov 18 at JKST at 2 p.m.)
Alabama State is 3-2 in conference play with two remaining conference games (Sat. vs. GRAM at 2 p.m. and next Sat. Nov. 18 at MVSU at 1 p.m.)
The first tie-breaker is head-to-head competition between the two tied teams, which would give Alcorn State the advance since it defeated Alabama State 24-10 back on Oct. 5 in their lone meeting this season.
Therefore, Alabama State would have to finish with a BETTER conference record than Alcorn State in order to win the SWAC East Division.
Alcorn State will clinch the division title this Saturday with either a win against MVSU OR an Alabama State loss vs. GRAM.
