HOUSTON, Texas – Three SWAC schools, Texas Southern, Alcorn State and Prairie View A&M competed in the Prairie View A&M Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Cypress Lakes Golf Club.  

The Lady Braves grabbed the top two spots individually as freshman Javvanvie Walia was crowned champion with a three-round score of 236 (+20), and junior Ouname Mhotsha placed second with a 240 (+24). The low round for each student-athlete was a 77 as Walia did it in the first and Mhotsha the second.   It was Walia's second first-place finish this year after she won the Challenge at the Bluffs on Oct. 9-10, 2017.  

A top-five performance came fromAlcorn State freshman Celestine Nawa as she carded a 252 (+36). Her low round was an 82 in the first.   Senior Abrea Grant and junior Sammye Schroer both improved their scoring averages. Coming into the tournament, Grant averaged a 98.4 score per round and Schroer 105.5. Grant ended with a 279 which is a 93 average, and Schroer a 293 which averages to a 97.7.  

PVAMU's Aubrianna Jordan finished third with a three-round total of 245 (84-82-79), improving every round of during the event. Jayla McRae finished seventh (253; 83-83-87), and Gayla Reed (262; 94-82-86), Kiana Shephard (263; 84-90-89), and Sterling Jones (272; 94-91-87) finished ninth, 10th and 11th, respectively.

The Lady Braves ended 14 strokes ahead of Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern who tied for second.

On the Men’s side the Panther men won the event after posting a final-round score of 300 to pull away from the field, winning with a three-round total of 910, finishing ahead of Alcorn St. (932) and Texas Southern (960).  

PVAMU's Jordan Stagg won in a one-hole in a playoff over teammate Laurence Crea, as the duo tied for top individual honors finishing at eight over 224 for the tournament. Crea shot a final round two-over 74, while Stagg shot a four-over 76 in the final 18. Stagg parred the playoff hole, while Crea just missed winning, as his chip from the greenside bunker for birdie holed out before bogeying the 18th.

Alcorn State was led by senior Daniel Racioppa who posted a 227 (+11) which was good for third-place. Racioppa registered a 77 in the first round and a 77 in the next two.   Racioppa ended one spot ahead of teammate Spencer Rhodes who notched a 229 (+13) for fourth. Rhodes shot a 71 in the first which was the lowest round of the tournament. Rhodes has finished top-five in each of his last three tournaments after he won the River City Challenge and took second at the ASU Invitational.  

Jon Jones of Prairie View A&M finished fifth with a three-round total of 231 (77-76-78), and Brandon Leach, also of PVAM posted a top-10 finish, shooting 237. His final round 72 was the lowest of the day and second-lowest round of the event. David Baker's 241 (84-77-80) completed the PV scoring.

Panther Seniors Jon Allen and Luther Thompson tied for ninth with 240 (+24) scores. Sophomore Jorge Garzon rounded it out with a 13th-place card of 246 (+30).
