Three meet records fell in the first day of competition at the 2011 SWAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Two of the broken records were set by their previous owners. Alabama State’s women and Grambling’s men led the team competition after day one.

Five events in each the men’s and women’s competition were finals on day one with 11 more events to be decided Sunday.
Shot Put (M) – Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Terron Armstead set a meet record in winning the shot put with a throw of 16.96m, besting his own record of 16.00m from a year ago.
Shot Put (W) – Texas Southern’s Danielle Miller set a meet record with a throw of 14.03m.
High Jump (M) – Texas Southern’s Clifton Swift broke his own mark in the high jump by four centimeters 2.14m to 2.18m to win the event.
High Jump (W) – Prairie View A&M’s Corinna Brown won the SWAC championship with a throw of 1.71m.
Long Jump (M) – Grambling’s Deangelo Waller won the event for the Tigers with a leap of 7.22m.
Long Jump (W) – Jackson State’s Arteshia Williams was crowned champion with a jump of 5.76m.
3,000m (M) – Grambling’s Darwin Price held off the competition with a time of 8:44.39.
3,000m (W) – Alabama State’s Kesia Derilus bested the field at 10:50.10.
Distance Medley (M) – Grambling’s team of Dequainte Brown, Lester Herbert, Stephone Leaks, and Deonte Pope took home the title with a time of 10:27.61.
Distance Medley (W) – Jackson State’s team of Deonna Bailey, Jasmine Evans, Alka Hamilton, and Brittany Jolly won the title with a time of 12:50.08.
Sunday’s field events begin at 8:00 a.m. with the finals in running events beginning at 1:00 p.m.
