Round-up Ends With A&M, SU and PVAM on Top
BATON ROUGE - The first SWAC bowling round-up is in the books for 2012. After three days at the Metro Bowl, Alabama A&M, Southern and Prairie View have emerged as the division leaders.
With one round-up left to be bowled on Feb. 17-19 in Jackson, Miss., Alabama A&M leads the East with a perfect 6-0 record. After finishing 3-2 on Friday, the Lady Bulldogs won their last 10 matches en route to a 12-2 record overall.
Alabama state and Jackson State are tied for second at 3-3, while Mississippi Valley State is bringing up the rear at 0-6. Overall, ASU finished the weekend 8-6, while JSU is 7-7 and MVSU 1-13.
In the West, Southern and Prairie View are tied at the top with division marks of 4-2. The Jaguars have the best overall record in the division at 10-4, while PVAM is 8-6. Texas Southern is also 8-6 overall and in third place in the West at 3-3. Like MVSU, Grambling will have some work to do in Jackson as they are sitting at the bottom of the division at 1-5 (2-12 overall).
The top three teams in each division will advance to the SWAC championship tournament in March in Arlington, Texas.
Alabama A&M topped all three team High Roller categories. The Lady Bulldogs had 12535 pins to lead the field, for a weekend high 179.1 average. A&M also had the highest team game of the round-up with a pinfall of 972.
Prairie View had the second highest pinfall of 12254, while Southern was third with 11967. Texas Southern had the second best team game score of 965, while A&M got on the board for a second time with the third best game score of 959. The Lady Panthers had the second best team average of 175.1 and Southern was third at 171.
Southern's Shannon Pearson rolled over 200 in all four games on Sunday and came out of the pack to claim the top spot in individual pinfall. She rolled a 225, 203, 211 and 223 on Sunday and finished the weekend with 2733 pins. Danielle Walker of A&M, who had held the top spot all weekend, was second with 2699, while Addileen Pointer of Alabama A&M claimed the No. 3 spot with 2652 pins.
Jelesa Maryland of Texas Southern shot a 268 on Friday and it held up for the highest individual game. She just edged Pointer who had a 266 game. Melanie DeCarlo of A&M had the third best game at 236.
Pearson's 195.2 was the top average of the weekend, with Walker second at 192.8 and Cynthia Veney of Prairie View third at 190.5.
